The French movie "The Brotherhood of the Wolf" is a brilliant take on this story. I highly recommended it.

You can see and feel the great validity of all this from the fact that one of these guys has a freaking parrot riding on his shoulder everywhere they go in the forest. Oh ya. These guys are really serious.

The stories go back 4000 years. That's amazing.

What i find with a sense of irony is that people think serial killers are a modern thing. Look at the the patterns and take out every mention of animal, and well....

"... decides to comb the area around the foot print... with all technological means..." - camera pivots to a stick and a tape measure on the ground :-)))))))

23:22 Operating out in the woods is dangerous… because you’ve got heavily armed lunatics who believe in werewolves running around. One guy even has a parrot. I think he thinks he’s a pirate.

I love that someone in the South USA is described as a ‘werewolf hunter’.

The Beast of Gévaudan killed full grown cows by dragging them down and throttling them, it also, contrary to what this film says, killed adult men too. It was the size of a donkey, roared, had a broad muzzle and and a long tail with a tassel at the end. It used both teeth and claws to kill, even scalping one woman who was trying to save her son. Wolves, dogs and wolf, dig hybrids do not use claws to kill. The Beast of Gévaudan was a maneless male lion or a tiger, lion hybrid. The gentry at the time kept private zoos on their grounds and there was a huge market in exotic animals about 50 miles from Gévaudan. There were many cases of such beasts escaping and killing livestock and humans. The Beast of Gévaudan is simply the best known.

If it was a hybrid owned by Chastell surely villagers would have seen him with it or, at least, been aware he was sneaking off somewhere and looked? Interesting video though.

I I believe it might have been a red French mastiff dog. Spanish conquistadors used mastiff dogs to hunt native Americans during their invasion. Maybe it was a serial killer that used a red mastiff that can weigh between 155 pounds to 240 pounds! It fits the descriptions. There is a great movie from 2001 with Vincent Cassel and Mark Damascos about this story, title "Le Pacte des loups". In the movie, the character uses a lion to commit those murders to discredit the king. Maybe it was a similar scenario in truth but using a red mastiff French dog.
