  I have said for years that &quot;love is a drug that your brain makes itself.&quot; &nbsp;Being in love feels like being high, and breaking up feels like going through withdrawals. &nbsp;People HATE it when you make this comparison (like they really really hate it) but I&apos;m glad science backs me up on this one.

  I have a distinct memory of being bored in english class and flipping through our textbook to a random essay, about an old man who lost his wife. It was describing how looking at your lover does similar things in your brain to doing heroin, and how the old man, with his wife now gone, was literally going through withdrawl in addition to his grief. I read these few paragraphs 20 years ago and I still think about it all the time, especially when my partner goes on a trip. I tend to feel a little more down then usual, and then light up into a smile when I pick her up at the airport.

  The hardest pill to swallow in this entire masterclass is at <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYP1CFr_QLo&amp;t=645">10:45</a> Romantic love hijacking the mother-infant bond. It&apos;s mind-blowing that our profound romantic feelings are basically just recycled hardware from maternal instincts. We literally just weaponized oxytocin to keep couples from abandoning each other. If romantic attachment and maternal attachment use the exact same brain circuitry, is there a neurological difference in how a breakup feels versus losing a family member?
