Could a 747 Actually Break the Sound Barrier? | Pilot Responds

Way back when, I was a ramp rat at JFK. Before pushing out of the gate, I always did a walkaround myself. (Loved doing it as I'm a private pilot) When the FO did his walk around a lot earlier, the bulk doors were still open, rear and forward cargo doors, fueler was still under the wing, catering was putting the food on the airplane and the entry doors were still open as well. I did catch the catering not closing the door properly once as the handle was not fully in position (I think it was a 757) and also once on an A310 Austrian, as passengers boarded and the aircraft got heavier, the right main gear seal let go under the weight. The hydraulics were pouring down the strut. Flight ended up being cancelled. So sometimes you have a few people doing the walk around, including the mechanics long after the pilot is back in his seat. Can't be too careful when it comes to aviation. Love your channel Captain Steeeve!!!

I fueled commercial aircraft, I can tell you everyone on the ground crew was always looking over the plane too. If I ever thought anything looked suspicious I would either tell the first officer when he came walking by or head up to the flight deck and let them know.

I flew from Johannesburg to Durban which is one hour and ten minutes normally. That day it was just half an hour. Going up we had terrible turbulence. Then smooth as silk and eerily quiet. The pilot came on to say we are in a very strong jet stream and our GROUND SPEED has exceeded the speed of sound. Going down to land was terribly turbulent again.

This is why we love you. You don't treat us like idiots. You tell us simply in layman's terms how the system operates. For that, I also subbed your alternate channel.
I would one day love to meet you and tell you my aviation history, only because I've enjoyed so much of yours. Thank you.

Back in the day a DC-8 was flown at faster than Mach one, in August 1961. 3 months later, the aircraft was delivered to Canadian Pacific as the Empress of Montreal, and for the next 13 years it quietly carried passengers who had no idea their airplane had once flown faster than sound.

A couple of years ago we were delayed a few minutes taking off. Why? Because our plane was over-fueled. Where? On a taxiway quite close to the runway, on the ground. What were we told? Somebody in the cockpit informed us that we had too much fuel on board and we were going to burn it off. We just sat there with the engines revved for about 5 minutes. And then we finished the trip to the runway and took off.

When I used to fly in the 1970s-1980s, before cellphones and the internet, we would go to a travel agency and they would find a route to your destination, make all of the arrangements and print out your tickets. It would include all of the tickets for any connecting flight which sometimes meant changing airlines during a layover at some airport. When you arrived at the airport, you would check your baggage and get your boarding pass, walk through a metal detector and get on your plane. There were travel agencies in most towns and cities.

Fun Fact: In those days, they would check your baggage through to your destination, but it did not necessary ride on the same aircraft as you. It would be loaded on an aircraft heading in your general direction, frequently not even using the same airport as your layover spot. Your baggage might get to your destination ahead of you and ride around on the baggage conveyor until you got it or someone else did. Or it might arrive a day or two later, depending on weather, routing and any other possible delays.
