You nailed the sudden shelter with this configuration. Ex GI a water trench around shelter would work if time would be allow.

I have been a fan of the poncho with the shock corded X-frame pole set that allows one to create a reflective parabola shelter.

I would love to see this concept taken out to its logical conclusion by marrying the pole set with a larger thermal cloak, such as the ones sold by Varusteleka in Finland. Varusteleka has three different versions of their thermal cloak. All three measure 210 cm × 210 cm, or 82.677" × 82.677" square.

The base material is a 3-layer sandwich consisting of a waterproof outer ripstop material along with a lighter weight inner material that is softer and more comfortable when touching one's bare skin. These two layers sandwich a flexible, low temperature rated, Mylar style metallicized fabric designed to reflect heat.

The three

I would run the hoisting string from over the branch down to a stake with a ring attached. Through the ring to a stake in the ground by your bedroll. Then if you need you can adjust the height while you are in bed. If it starts raining in the night for instance you could lower it right over you. Just a thought.

The poles also work with a surplus tarp. Ive got a marpat one and you can put the poles on 1 side and have an alpha shelter with a ground cloth under you, or do two sets of poles in an a frame with tons of room inside. I can fit my family with 3 small kids in it.
