Well sir. Your number four. The 45 Schofield is partially incorrect. Yes you can shoot the Schofield in the colt. But you can only load three. The rims are too big to load more. Neither Colt nor Simth and Wesson were inclined to fix this. They were in competition not only for pistol sales but also ammunition.

Troops lined the school’s round for accuracy and reduced recoil. So in 1883 ( I think) the lake city arsenal made a round with the Schofield case, bullet and powdered charge but with a rim larger than the 45 colt but less than 45 Schofield. This m83 round fed both and was “45 colt” long after the Schofield was retired.
On the civilian market 45 Colt was dubbed “45 long colt” to differentiate it from the military M83 cartridge.
The bullet weight and speed of the M83 became the desired standard for the 45 rimless developed by lake city in a rimless case. That colt later chambered its 1902-1911 military pistols for as the 45 ACP.
As did all the other contenders in those military pistol trials.

Number two is misleading. The 1873 44 Winchester was the first universal pistol/ rifle round, following the 44 Henry. Several pistol makers quickly produced 44 WCF capable revolvers. Coining the term 44-40. The 38-40 came along about 8 years later. As did the 32-20. All chamber in rifles and revolvers of the day.
