Thanks for the interesting info. When I book flights, I use Webjet or Skyscanner etc to find the flight I want. Then I buy the tickets directly from the carrier, so that if anything goes wrong with the flight, I can go directly to the carriers office at the airport. It’s so much easier to correct flight issues when talking directly to the carrier face to face.

Always book the restricted fare. My kid went to university across the continent. In over 30 flights there and back, we've only had to pay a change fee once. Restricted saved us thousand$.<br><br>Also, the heck with paying to choose seats. Flying will be uncomfortable for a few hours no matter where I'm sitting, not paying fifty bucks to be insignificantly less comfortable when I can spend that on a nice dinner. (After > 30 years of marriage, I can manage a few hours not sharing an arm rest with my wife).

Whew! That’s a lot of work. We travel 2-3 months a year, and I do most of the planning and booking. Can’t imagine doing that for full-time travel.

Planning is half the fun, in my opinion too. I don't intentionally plan that far ahead for most things but some seasons are better for certain destinations and there really is no other way. The earlier you plan, the more time you have to look forward to it!
