She's Back! Nene Royal's Live Hysteria Cover – Grammy Member Breaks It Down

Nene Royal is back, and this time she's playing to a room full of people instead of a camera — AGT's Judges' Callbacks round, in a small theatre rather than the big audition stage, performing for judge Howie Mandel — so I wanted to see what changes when a sixteen-year-old who normally performs alone in her bedroom suddenly has a live audience to win over. As a Grammy voting member, Billboard-charting songwriter and Estill-qualified vocal producer, I break down her AGT Judges' Callbacks cover of "Hysteria" by Muse: how she handles a live crowd completely differently to her usual YouTube performances, why her breath technique is doing the opposite of what Matt Bellamy does on the original, and the rock stance she pulls straight from the Freddie Mercury and Bruce Dickinson playbook. In this reaction I break down: 🎤 Live-audience confidence vs. studio performance — and why the two are completely different skills 🎸 The Matt Bellamy comparison — and why Nene's breath technique does the opposite of his 🕺 The classic rock stance, and what it means when a young woman "takes up space" on a stage that size ✍️ Why I've started writing lyrics for her original instrumental, "Real Verse" 🎨 My synesthetic colour report on this performance I also talk about why I hope the backlash that tends to follow young women in this industry doesn't find her, and why — win or not — she's already built something that outlasts this season of AGT. 📺 Missed the earlier ones?
