“I didn’t kill him. It was an accident. I was cleaning my stiletto, and this guy stumbled and fell with his belly on my stiletto… ten times.”

In Italy we also call the stiletto misericordia, because in the battlefields after the fight the scavengers would go kill the wounded left behind to "save" them from a slow painful death and free them from their precious belongings

I wonder if the weapon in the first account involving the Duke of Buckingham may have actually been a so-called "Buckingham dagger". They're about the same size, and the date of the 1620s is absolutely spot-on for the height of popularity of both types of dagger.

What a coincidence, I've been researching stilettos thuroughly for the last couple days, and just then a new video gets released on the subject. I, being a 17th century artillery reenactor, was most interested in the fussetod or bombardeer's stiletto. Some are of the small lathe turned variety that one would also expect to find in a woman's sleeve, and others are more formidable poignard-like daggers with thicker grips and longer blades. What they all have in common though is a scale from 1 to 100 with non-regular intervals which was meant to calculate shot weight from measuring the bore diameter. According to German sources both types of stilletos fall into the panzerstecher (armor piercer) or gnadgott (god of mercy) category of weapons which were a type of dagger meant to incapacitate an armored opponent and to deliver a merciful blow to a wounded enemy. According to this same German source, there are also stilettos and fusettos of German origin, but I have no way of verifying.

I saw plenty of women using stilettos living in Essex. They were mainly white and worn on the feet. A friend of mine did get hit in the head with one and they are quite effective weapons.

I love love love when you bring out the historical sources, it just brings these weapons and history to life in an excellent way. It's always so interesting hearing from people who actually lived through eras where all these weapons were just a part of every day life.

If I lived in Renaissance Italy, I wouldn't call wearing mail under your clothing "over-cautious" - I'd call it 'damned smart'.
