To think that life evolved for billions of years up to a point where it can now retrace its own steps through the ages and explain the road it took back to itself...and then say "wow that was weird, i was a weird ugly kid back then" 😇

What's crazy is that those early animals wouldn't have even understood the concept of predation. In a world where literally nothing has ever happened there would quite literally be no defense mechanisms in any animal, they wouldn't have even had the capacity to understand, let alone react to being eaten when predators finally evolved.

Things like clams and jellyfish don't have brains, but they at least have the capacity to respond to stimuli because their bodies understand that they need to eat and avoid being eaten to survive, but ediacaran animals wouldn't have even had autopilot, they just... existed. Imagine an entire planet populated by complex animals that haven't figured out that they exist yet, that's actually really eerie

    Point of fact:
These mats weren't really "slime." The upper layers might have been, but most of the mats formed a firm-to-hard substrate, probably similar to dense clay. Worms weren't burrowing into the sediment; they were burrowing into this bacterial substrate, which is partially responsible for the ecological collapse.

To be clear, this stuff is still everywhere, and is the bedrock of all aquatic and most terrestrial ecosystems. They are what fix nitrogens into safe usable forms, making the major macronutrient of all life. They're just microscopic now.

Sounds to me like this was the only time there was truly peace and harmony on Earth.

I really hate how A.I. repeats simple points the entire 1st half, and beats dead horses... into mats and more mats.
