  I was 1 of 4 TBM operators on the English service tunnel.<br>The machine we drove was a Howdens 5.4m open shield and it completed 24kms in late October 1990 when it was driven hard right off line, stripped of all serviceable components and pumped full of concrete.<br>The short 2m x 1m tunnel used for the official breakthrough on December 1st 1990 was hand dug by my brother and myself.<br>We were also part of the gang that hand excavated the last 40m of tunnel to complete the connection with the French tunnel on January 16th 1991.<br>I also can claim that I excavated the mid-point at ring number 12033 on June 19th 1990.<br>There are several other factual discrepancies in this video but overall it was quite interesting.

  I was seconded as firefighter to the Channel Tunnel for 3 years. It is a facinating place to work. You have firefighters working together from the UK and French side, so there were obvious issues with language, procedures, time differences etc. Every incident down the tunnel would get fire crews from both nations that are station at the Channel Tunnel site mobilsed to it. There is a midpoint in the tunnel and whichever side of the midpoint had the incident, that national fire service would be in charge of the whole incident. At all times there is a fire service vehicle (STTS) within the middle third of the tunnel, so as to be able to respond to incidents quickly.

  I worked on the Channel Tunnel, also saw the construction of the boaring machine&apos;s at Howden&apos;s in Scotland and was an electrical fitter on Carruthers overhead travelling cranes handling the concrete segments. Very interesting project, but I&apos;d say it won&apos;t have as long a life as expected due to geological movement? Lasers we&apos;re used to the max and I remember the break through day! 😊

  Being a surveyor on this project must have been stressful. If you had a bad day you would sink the whole tunnel

  One of the customers cars I collect for work is this old gentlemen called Mr Hammond and one day I asked him what he used to do for living in he’s early days as he’s way over 90 now, and apparently he was engineer and he’s last project was channel tunnel from english site, he was head of engineers running a team of engineers who worked on channel tunnel.
