Honestly the fact you managed to live into adulthood growing up in an English speaking country without knowing the story of Romeo and Juliet is wild. Many of us were forced to read it in school (I was) but even if not that, it makes so many appearances, references, and mentions in other pop culture its insane you didn’t know at least the main premise lol. Very interesting reaction to watch!

This movie has one of the best soundtracks ever. I absolutely love it

This is my favorite version of the story. They kept the language intact and especially the priest speaks in true iambic pentameter. This is truly fantastic making such an old story accessible

“This movie is sooo extra!” It’s a Baz Luhrman film—his films are all soooo extra! His movies are always about high emotions, with the costumes, the settings, the soundtracks, and the performances all ramping up that intensity.

This is the dialogue of the original play. The director just brought it up to modern day times. For instance, biting the thumb literally is like giving the finger. I remember watching this back in high school. This version has to be the most popular one because it was something different than the Shakespearian olden times.

I always laugh when people think Romeo and Juliet is a romance with couple goals if they claim to be familiar with the story. Not even close lol

Shakespeare wrote this story in 1595-1596. I would say it’s best to understand the story before watching to both understand what they are saying and appreciate how amazing this modern take on the story looks.

This is the best version of Romeo and Juliet in my opinion. I'm so happy you don't know anything about the story!! Great reaction!

The colours in this film are so supersaturated, it's divine. Every frame of film looks like an artwork.

The symbolism, iconography, performances, music, cinematography... this movie truly is a masterpiece.

Romeo and Juliet is not a love story, it is a tragedy. In the beginning of the movie Romeo is heartbroken and tormented over a girl named Rosaline. Rosaline is also a Capulet, Juliets cousin. She took a vow of abstinence and refused Romeos advances. His infatuation with her is what leads him to the Capulets masquerade party, where he ends up meeting Juliet and infatuated with her.
The story can be interpreted as an allegory for the dangers of making significant decisions based solely on emotion and infatuation rather than sound judgment.
The intensity of their passion leads to their demise; what brought them together also sets them on a path to destruction, which is a hallmark of tragedy.
The play's underlying message is about intense infatuation and lust that young people misinterpret as love and the destructive consequences of the "ancient grudge" between the Montague and Capulet families, which ultimately costs two innocent lives.

I remember watching this in English class and being upset why it didn’t have a happy ending. But then I realized, it’s William Shakespeare lol ✨

Enjoyed this a lot!
