12 years from now...I'll probably have three more Sonic movies to talk about.

I remember a collective "what the f***" from my animation class when we watched the initial trailer the day it came out.

i think it was confirmed that the higher-ups at paramount forced that ugly design and it took a lot of convincing by Jeff Fowler to get the higher-ups to allow it to be changed

If Paramount hadn’t listened to the Sonic fans and changed movie Sonic’s design for the better, we never would have the successful trilogy we have today!

I remembered that the Sonic movie was stuck in production hell. Right now, we got a trilogy that earned over a billion dollars together and a TV show!

The "publicity stunt" theory never made sense to me since SEGA had to put the keychain for the "old design" Baby Movie Sonic as bonus for Sonic Colors Ultimate. You would think that they would instead use the final design for Baby Sonic instead of the old one if they're gonna bundle such stuff. It really screams "we just want to get rid of the stock but also get a bit of money out of it".

This is literally the first time I heard someone finally acknowledging the Sonic OVA being animated by Studio Pierrot in a YouTube video.

I find it funny how one could chalk up the Ugly Sonic controversy to Paramount Pictures' executives being too complacent with Michael Bay's photorealistic takes on the cast of Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, especially when the 2020's would have Paramount Pictures publish much more stylized and faithful movies for Transformers and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Even funnier is that by 2024 and 2025, the Sonic series has now officially collaborated with both Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Transformers!

You know, say what you want about Tom, but it could have been worse. Could have been a whole flock of Chris Thorndykes.

I absolutely think the reason owls are such a focus in the movies because of the owl imagery in the first game. I doubt they even saw the old ova.

I think one of the reasons the sonic movies work for me is because they truely know what they are. Early video game movies always felt like they were ashamed of being based on video games, and they wanted to hide that fact by rewriting/redesigning the characters and massivly change their stories.

The Sonic movies do deviate from the games, but in ways that make sense for the world it's created. The core is still there and it is not ashamed to show off that fact. Audiences can feel authenticity, and are a lot more willing to look past it's flaws when the movie shows it is authentic.

Still insane to me how the movie cemented "gotta go fast" as Sonic's catchphrase. A phrase he's only ever said once, and as a joke, in Sonic Boom and nowhere else in any other cartoon or video game. It is however, from the Sonic X opening.

4Kids continues to affect pop culture in subtle ways despite of all the clowning it faced.
