Finland used to be Catholic but that was over 400 years ago before the Reformation.

About accepting compliments: it's an ancient reflex leftover from times when we finns believed that each person has a tangibly limited amount of luck/fortune. If you recieved a compliment, it would be directly out of that luck/fortune you've accumulated in life.

"Kellä onni on, se onnen kätkeköön." = Whoever has the luck/fortune, ought to hide it.

I used to have a neighbour for years, and only after I moved out, I learnt that he was one of Finlands most internationally renowned metal composer and singer.
Never came up as we met at the trash bin 😅
To me he was just some nice long haired hippie 😅

Most of that goes for Sweden too. Denmark-Norway-Sweden and Finland are siblings.

Personal space is also sacred in restaurants and cafes. If there isn´t empty table, you don´t just sit any table that has someone eating or drinking there, you´ll ask first is it ok to sit there as well. Applies basicly everywhere that is public space. But in busses and trams some people rather stand than sits next to someone. Rush hours are different. Then people sit if there is any seat available. Bus might get so crowded that there isn´t room to move and there might be 30 more people that the bus than seats. That sure is Finnish nightmare. But that´s an exception. Nobody want´s to stnd out in bus stop and wait for the next one, at least not in cold winter days.

No cheek kisses for sure. Sometimes i´ve been surpriced as i´ve got kissed straight to lips or even with tongue by some pretty ladies. I always think wtf just happened becouse mostly it´s been very random and wouldn´t ever expect such thing. Also as Finns doesn´t kiss very much, some of my dates has been blown away that how to heck i am an excelent kisset (with tongue of course). Actually three woman have been amazed and all those three have claimed that man can´t kiss, how you can be good at it?! 😁

Most people in Finland are not religious at all. It´s just an ancient custom to be part of some religion group. Pretty much same in all Nordic countries. I´ve never been babtized, never been part of any religious group what so ever and never want to be. I believe more in to fart than a god. You can´t see those, you can´t feel those, but at least you can smell the fart so it must be real 🤷♂. But still i wouldn´t go to preach to other people of all mighty fart 😂.

I hate queques. If some place is giving something for free, i stay out of the place. Too much crowd and no personal space what so ever. When some new place opens that i want to check out, i´ll go there week or two after opening. Some big hypermarkets and markets have so called rush hours too when there is the biggest peak of customers. I try to avoid those times too. I live pretty big city for Finnish scale (Tampere as he talked about in this video) and we have some of the biggest markets open here 24/7. I usually go between 10-12 pm to do my shopping. Not much other people around.

Think that he is dead on and that it is valid for at least all the Scandinavian countries if not all the Nordic. One thing to remember though is that we are like siblings, we trash each other all the time but do not think that you as a foreigner may trash my siblings the same as I do.

One joke about our distance keeping was that we as Scandinavians drew a sigh of relief when the 2 m distance due to Covid was ended since we could go back to our normal distances and didn't have to stand so close.

To me as a Swede, I think that the distance keeping and not to small talk everywhere is a sign of respect to my fellow man, I normally want my own bubble and I give that curtesy to everyone else.
However if you want to talk to a Scandi ask a real question, we love to help and we have no issue talking to people if we feel that there is a reason for it, so starting off with "Excuse me, may I ask you a question?" will surely give a positive answer in 90% of the cases. But as he said "How are you?" is a question we ask to acquaintances or closer and even though we expect a nonsical answer, you have to listen to the answer and respond accordingly. That is one of the main reasons Americans are considered shallow since to them it is a "nicety" but for us it is nicety with genuine interest.

There are very few Catholics in Finland, around 0.3% of the total population. Most Finns belong to the Evangelical Lutheran Church, but the majority of the people aren’t actually religious. It’s more of a cultural tradition to go through confirmation, etc..

Finland has full freedom of religion, so you can belong to any religion you choose, or not belong to any at all.

A lot of emphasis is put to stating that Finnish and Swedish aren't from the same language family, but you should also acknowledge that Finland was part of Sweden for over half a millennium, and Swedish was an official language during that time. Something which has resulted to Finnish having around 4,000 loanwords from Swedish. There are loanwords already from Proto-Germanic in Finnish, so the interaction between the language groups go way back. Notable in Swedish there are only around 30 loan words from Finnish. Also, while there are around 700,000 Swedes with Finnish ancestry, Finnish language became an official minority language in Sweden as late as in 1999. The same year as these bangers were released. Video: "Darude - Sandstorm" and "Bomfunk MC's - Freestyler (Video Original Version)". I'd say that Finland is ahead of Sweden in classical, opera, folk, rock, metal, and definitely in suomisaundi. Not that it is competition. Right? And some of most popular Swedish musicians have Finnish ancestry. The same applies to some Finnish musicians the other way around as well, but let's not address that any further. Video: "Kent - Då Som Nu För Alltid". Noting that a group from Finland represented Sweden in the last year's Eurovision Song Contest, which was unheard-of. Video: "KAJ - Bara Bada Bastu (LIVE) | Sweden | Grand Final | Eurovision 2025". Nordics are Lutheran. The confirmation school is for those, who are members of the church. People in general aren't seriously religious, which is the reason why people avoid getting into religious debates, and view faith as a personal thing. People in general don't talk about/debate over politics either. Finns in general give value to equality. That reflects to both compliments and queuing. Video: "Black Friday chaos from Finland!". Your tone of voice can come out as quite commanding at times, regarding that "Get out of my way, please". You might have a future in Finland. Video: "Ihmebantu - Mummo". This might be an interesting video to you. Video: "I Spent 39 Hours on a GIANT Ferry That Holds 3116 People". Also relating videos: "Esa-Pekka Salonen on Sibelius & Finland’s Independence Movement", "The Golden Era of Finnish Art 1880-1910", "Discover Art Nouveau in Helsinki: City of Nature, Myth & Granite", "Kalevala by Elias Lönnrot—The epic poem of Finland (12 things you should know)" and "The Goofy Wizard Duel That Inspired Tolkien's Bombadil - A Glimpse into Lönnrot's Kalevala". On Finnish design and architecture influence. Something which has benefited also Ikea. Google "translate". "Finland converted to the Protestant Lutheran faith in the 16th century as part of the Reformation in the Swedish Empire.
Key years and stages:
1527: At the Diet of Västerås, Sweden-Finland began to convert to Lutheranism, and the Reformation received political support when King Gustav Vasa sought to reduce the power of the Catholic Church.
1530s and 1540s: Reforms progressed slowly. The church began to favor Lutheran doctrine.
1536: Some sources consider the transition to Lutheranism to have been established as early as the mid-1530s.
1550s: Mikael Agricola, the "father of the Finnish literary language", was a key figure in the Reformation, making Lutheran doctrine available to the people in the vernacular (e.g. ABC-kirja 1543, New Testament in Finnish 1548).
The Protestant Reformation in Finland was not a one-time event, but a lengthy process that changed the structures of the church and society during the 16th century.
