For years, Texas was one of the places everyone seemed to be moving to. More space. Bigger homes. No state individual income tax. A lower cost of living compared with some expensive coastal cities. For thousands of families, moving to Texas looked like an easy way to get more for their money. But now, some people who made that move are discovering expenses they weren’t expecting. Housing costs have climbed, property taxes can be substantial, and homeowners insurance has become an increasingly painful expense. The Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas found that the median Texas homeowner was paying 60% more for home insurance in 2024 than in 2019, with severe weather, construction costs and reinsurance costs contributing to the increase. And people aren’t just moving into Texas. Census data show a significant amount of movement in both directions, with hundreds of thousands of residents moving between Texas and other states each year. Then there are the things that don’t always show up on a moving calculator: brutal summer heat, traffic and long commutes in sprawling metro areas, severe-weather risks, lifestyle differences and the realization that “no state income tax” doesn’t mean living in Texas is inexpensive. But there’s an important twist to this story: Texas is not experiencing some mass population collapse. The state remains one of America’s biggest population-growth stories. Census estimates showed Texas added nearly 563,000 residents between 2023 and 2024, including a positive domestic migration balance. So why are so many people still leaving?
