When it comes to parasites, specifically Entamoeba histolytica, the correct protocol post Metronidazole (4 X 500mg - 750mg for 10 days) is to take paromomycin. (3 X 500mg for 7 days)<br>Or else the cysts will remain in your intestine & you'll keep getting sick. IMPORTANT, paromomycin is NOT available in Bali. So you MUST get the medication when you get home if you don't live in Bali. Otherwise good luck!

As an American living in Indonesia for 8 months I ate nearly everything from street shops on Lombok, Central Java, and Jakarta and I even had some suspect jamu from a shared cup. Not one day of illness. But I assure you I kept cipro in my kit, just in case. Eat where the locals are eating is always my best advice.

I always take the local herbal remedy after eating a questionable meal in Indonesia : it's called Tolak Angin (which means Push Wind). It helps digestion and kills bacteria. It's made from honey, ginger, fennel, cinnamon and a few other herbs, all of which are antimicrobial. Indonesians swear by it, they take it as a cure-all for any kind of illness. You can buy Tolak Angin in every convenience store, or it's competitor brand Antangin (anti-wind). As you can tell by the name it helps to expel gas. Another good one is Norit (activated charcoal) also available everywhere. Helps with diarrhea.

Fun tips : Becareful with sambal in Indonesia, there's no standard cap in it recipe, everyone have their own sambal eventho they came from the same location and recipes, they might look the same but they actually not. Some even very very deceiving, some look pale like not spicy but turned out it spicy, and vice versa it might look hot and red even dark but turned out its quite sweet. So the trick about sambal , don't pour as much at first, you just add it bit by bit till you find your level. A lot of mistake by Foreigner and Local Non-Chili eater do, they underestimating the sambal.

The two worst food poisonings I've ever suffered in Asia were #1 from a fancy high end restaurant in Saigon and 2nd from a fancy hotel buffet in Manila. Street food might actually be safer.<br><br>If hell actually exists, it may consist of a bout of epic food poisoning on an endless bus trip. 😢

Been in Indonesia for just over 9 years,and can count bad stomachs on one hand..When i first came here visiting my now wife,i tried nasi goreng and sate quite a lot from the street stalls.For me sate local to me just outside of Jakarta has changed..Sate used to be very much more peanut,but now seems to be more bango and less peanuts..Soto can vary as well .some very tasty,some very bland.I try not to eat much fried food,and vary my diet between rice,noodles and potatoes..
