I rented this movie on VHS for my daughter when it first came out, she was 9. She will be 40 in October and I'm 66, her and I watched this over and over through the years. Blockbuster went out of business and I bought the VHS tape, which I later replaced with a DVD. I was so happy when I found it. The DVD still sits on my shelf though my DVD player no longer works. I loved this movie so much I just kept it. When it came up tonight on my computer to watch I was elated. It is one of my absolute favorites, I'm so grateful to have seen it again. Thank You Popcornflix, Thank you. From a happy old lady.

Oscar Wilde wrote this novella in 1887 and it still delivers. Bravo!

Anything with Patrick Stewart in will always be worth watching. His live one man show of A Christmas Carol was the absolutely the best performance I ever sat through in London. We went back and saw it again. Such a shame it was never filmed. 😢 He would have won every award going for this performance.

Back when they did clean family movies, I loved this one when I was a teenager.

English is my second language, and The Canterville Ghost is what made me fall in love with it. I read a simplified version at 13. I’m 42 now, and I'm watching it teary-eyed. Some stories stay with you forever. ✨

Here’s a clear, concise summary of The Canterville Ghost by Oscar Wilde:

The story follows the American Otis family, who move into Canterville Chase, a haunted English mansion. Despite warnings, they aren’t afraid of ghosts—in fact, they treat them very practically.

The ghost, Sir Simon de Canterville, has haunted the house for centuries, scaring previous residents. But when he tries to frighten the Otis family, everything goes wrong. Instead of being terrified, they annoy him—offering him oil for his noisy chains and even playing tricks on him. The ghost becomes frustrated and miserable as his attempts to scare them keep failing.

Things change when he meets Virginia, the Otis daughter. Unlike the rest of her family, she shows him kindness. Sir Simon confesses his sadness and guilt over his past crimes and explains that he cannot rest in peace unless someone helps him.

Virginia agrees to help. She disappears with the ghost for a time and prays for his forgiveness. Eventually, Sir Simon is finally able to find peace and “die” properly. His body is discovered, and he is given a respectful burial.

In the end, Virginia returns safely, having helped redeem the ghost. The story blends humor with themes of forgiveness, compassion, and the contrast between American practicality and traditional British values.

This version turned out to be wonderful. Stewart is in his element and it shows what an artist he is.
