The Celtics became a great team revolving around Bird.
NO matter who was on his team.
But when the '86 team clicked, they were the best.
They got lucky they had Walton. & Walton was lucky
to have them. RIP big guy 🙏

1986 Bird finished as league MVP for the 3rd straight season & top 2 in MVP for the 6th straight. Bird also led the league in defensive win shares for the 4th time in 7 years. He also finished 2nd twice in defensive win shares in that 1st 7 year span & he had one 5th place finish. His 1st 9 years he was 4th, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 1st, 1st, 1st, 3rd, & 2nd in MVP. During those same 1st 9 years he was 1st, 1st, 2nd, 5th, 1st, 2nd, 1st, 6th, & 18th in defensive win shares in the entire NBA. (Those 6th & 18th place finishes would’ve been much higher but Bird was playing with a bad back & bone spurs in both feet as well as Achilles issues in both those 8th & 9th years. Playing with all those injuries makes the fact that he shot 50/40/90 in both that 8th & 9th pro year even more absurd. Bird owns the 2nd highest career winning percentage of any player ever that has played in at least 500 career games. Bird played almost 900 career regular season games & he has a 73.58% winning percentage in them. Just for comparison LeBrons is 64.6% (or 10% lower than Birds). Bird is a career 88.6% foul shooter & over his last 9 years that FT% was over 90%! Bird ranks #60 on the NBA’s career defensive rating rankings. MJ’s #108. LBJ is outside the top #250. Bird holds a career head to head record vs MJ of 23-11 & in their career playoff matchups it’s Bird 6 wins MJ 0. Bird won all 3 3pt contest he entered, (all 3 consecutive). From the start of 1985/86 through the end of 1986/87 Bird led the Celtics to an 89-3 record over 92 straight home games. (85/86 regular 40-1, then that playoffs 10-0 in route to the NBA title, then 39-2 in the 86/87 regular season). 89-3! In the video you asked about 1986 Milwaukee. The Bucks were elite the entire decade of the 1980’s. They won at least 49 games every year but one in the decade. Their decade was 49 wins in 79/80, then 60, 55, 51, 50, 59, 57, 50, 42, & 49 for the rest of the decade. They made 3 ECF’s in the decade. They lost to Philadelphia 4-1, lost to Boston 4-1, & got swept by Boston 4-0 in those 3 ECF’s. That’s how tough the 1980’s East was. A perineal 50 win team had no chance of getting out of the east. As for who the 1986 Bucks had, it was Sidney Moncrief, Terry Cummings, Ricky Pierce, Paul Pressey, Craig Hodges, Alton Lister, & Randy Breuer getting most of the PT. They went 57-25 that season & Don Nelson was the head coach. The following season they added Jack Sikma, Junior Bridgeman, & John Lucas who averaged nearly 18 ppg that season. The Bucks were tough, just never broke through due to Philadelphia & Bostons dominance from 1980-1988 & Detroit ruling the end of the decade in the East. Bird arrived in Boston for the 1979/80 season after Boston had went 29-53 the year before. He led them to 61-21 his rookie year. 32 win improvement & he took them to the ECF. He ultimately took them to 8 ECF’s in his 1st 9 years. The only year he didn’t get to the ECF in that 1st 9 years he made the ECSF’s but those aforementioned Bucks swept Boston in that ECSF. Bird is the only player in the 80+ year NBA history to have a career averaging at least 24 points a game while also averaging at least 10 rebounds per game while also averaging at least 6 assists per game. The only 24/10/6 career guy the league has ever had! 24.3 / 10.0 / 6.3. He also averaged 1.7 steals a game for his career. His February 18th 1985 game vs Utah is my personal favorite feat. He scored 30 points, grabbed 12 rebounds, dished out 10 assists, accumulated 9 steals & had 2 blocks. That was after 33 minutes played all before the 4th quarter started. (The only quadruple double in NBA history at the time was Nate Thurmond’s in the mid 1970’s. After 3 quarters Bird was within 1 steal of the 2nd quadruple double ever. He checked out & watched the entire 4th quarter from the bench. All that mattered to Bird was W’s! No modern star is checking out of a game with 12 minutes left while being 1 anything away from a Quadruple Double. I also like his game 7 in the 1988 ECSF’s vs Atlanta. Dominique had 47 that game. Bird had guaranteed a game 7 win after game 6. Through 3 quarters Bird only had 14 points. Once winning time came he did what he always did in the clutch. He scored 20 points in the quarter while shooting 9 for 10 from the field, including 6 of 6 on his final 6 shots to lead Boston to the game 7 & series win. Birds 1st year playing college ball at Indiana State he averaged 32.8 points, 13.3 rebounds, almost 4.5 assists, nearly 3 steals, & a block per game. In his Senior year he averaged 14.9 rebounds a game & he became the 1st player ever to win consensus National Player of the Year from a Mid Major school. Of course won Rookie of the year in a landslide over Magic their rookie year. 63 1st place votes to 3 1st place votes. Bird won All Star game MVP in 1982. Bird won Olympic Gold with the Dream Team in 1992. Bird also has a Coach of the year & an executive of the year on his resume. Larry Joe GOAT Bird!
