I am from a small gypsy village in Appalachia, and my family keeps the old ways. We light a small white candle 🕯️ every night for the nightlings. And tomorrow on the longest night we leave out a feast (a tiny feast) for them. Bread and cookies and meat and milk and juice. My sons all leave a piece of candy on the end of their bed for the nightling that watches their sleep. They are teenagers and still love this tradition as much as they did as small children. The old ways have not been forgotten. We may be few now and spread apart instead of celebrating as a whole village but the old ways stand. 🌲 🕯️ 🍬 ❤
May all that read this have a safe and warm and peaceful long night ❤

As a Swede, I grew up on the old Norse legends. (My dad, grandpa & uncles would sit around drinking after meals & tell tales to us kids. We still left porridge (oatmeal now), out for the Tomte at Christmas. The Elves & the Shoemaker has always been my favorite fairytale. ❤

It's funny how this is unsuitable for the Disney animated formula: Focus on elderly main characters not young main characters, no romance, no villain for black & white ethics, nudity is a major story element, and economics is the main characters' primary motivation.
Maybe it's just a matter of time before they re-write the story, add new young characters, miss the point, and conclude it with the same ending you've seen in every other Disney movie.

Just this week I heard a Russian lady explain why brides were carried over the thresholds of their new husbands' houses. Protective relatives had been buried at the threshold long, long ago. They would not let any dead or dangerous thing into the house. A new bride had become dead to her family when she left them. She could enter the new home only if a living person carried her in. After the bride had been carried into her new home, she came back to life and was then accepted as family by the protectors at the threshold.

Could the original story possibly date back to the time some cultures buried their deceased family members inside their homes, like they did at Catal Hoyuk? That would mean the folk memory goes back around 8,000 years or more. Very interesting!

This sheds some light on the Christmas customs of Elf on the Shelf, and leaving milk and cookies for Santa.

Growing up in Ireland, I fully believed this story above all others, because we have the wee folk here. I LOVED this story so much. 👍🇮🇪

The little people remind me of Doby in Harry Potter, and he became free when Harry gave him a sock.
