Genesis Never Says Adam Was Absent—So Why Did the Serpent Speak to Eve?

In Genesis 3:6, the whole scene turns on two small words: “with her.” She saw, she took, she ate, then she gave some to her husband with her, and he ate. Adam is not pictured away on an errand. He is present at the handing over — present without a single recorded question to the serpent, reminder to his wife, or appeal to God. That phrase reframes the question from where was he to what were they both doing with what God had said. Genesis 2 sets the order without commentary. God forms the man from dust, breathes into him the breath of life, places him in Eden to cultivate it and keep it, and commands him with wide generosity inside one clear limit: “You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but you shall not eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.” Only afterward is the woman built from his side and brought to him as bone of his bones. Genesis never records God repeating those exact words in her hearing, and never records how Adam passed them on. She knows enough to discuss the command, and how she learned it is unstated. The serpent does not begin with denial, but with doubt: “Has God really said, ‘You shall not eat of any tree of the garden’?” Generosity is made to sound like stinginess. Eve answers standing on truth under pressure — We may eat — yet adds a phrase never recorded in the command: “You shall not touch it.” Scripture leaves its source unstated. Then doubt becomes denial — “You won’t really die” — and rivalry — “you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” The garden has not changed. How God sounds in the mind has changed.
