At the heart of this historic movement stood Manhae Han Yong-un, an independence activist, Buddhist monk, and poet. 1) Role in the March 1st Movement Han Yong-un signed the Declaration of Independence as one of the 33 national representatives, advocating for Korea’s freedom through nonviolent resistance. Following the proclamation, he was arrested and sentenced to three years in Seodaemun Prison. 2) Unwavering Spirit in Prison Even behind bars, his belief in Korea’s independence never wavered. He firmly held onto the conviction that "Korea will inevitably regain its independence." 3) The Silence of the Beloved and the Spirit of Independence His renowned poetry collection, The Silence of the Beloved (님의 침묵), uses the metaphor of ‘the Beloved’ to symbolize his lost homeland. The deep sorrow of losing his country and the burning desire to reclaim it are powerfully expressed through his poetry. His literature was not just an artistic expression—it became a tool of national awakening and resistance. A Lifetime Devoted to Korean Independence Han Yong-un dedicated his life to both Buddhist reform and the independence movement, standing firm until Korea was free from colonial rule. 💬How should we remember his dream of a free Korea? ※ ⓒ MBC&iMBC.
