We were wrong about Jax...

Yeah, Jax is a bully and an abuser. It doesn't really matter what kind of trauma they have been through, what matters is the actions they choose to make. There are cases to be made for where characters are genuinely unaware of some consequences of their actions, but this isn't one of those cases.

What is so scary about how people are talking about Jax is that the humanization of them seemingly makes people think that they have to be a good person deep down or something. This is something I have noticed about a lot of "humanizing the bully" plotlines, when the abuser is shown to have some genuine human emotions, suddenly it's like people think they can't be 'that' bad, and they are seemingly divorced from their actions.

Here's the thing, you could be the sweetest, most genuine person in the world, but if you constantly suppress that part of yourself and only act like a heartless bully, then you are being the cold heartless bully. The funny thing about masks is that the whole idea of it being a mask is a comfortable lie we tell ourselves to escape from the fact that the mask is actually a part of ourselves. It's a way to avoid taking responsibility for the choices we make and the actions we take, so we blame it on 'another', a version of ourselves that we divorce from our 'true' selves. And people do the same with characters, it's not Jax who is doing all those horrible things, it's their defense mechanism, their trauma response, their 'mask', that is the bad one. No, in peoples minds the 'real' Jax is truly a good person. The only thing I wonder is, where is that person? Where was that part of Jax when they subjected Gangle to enough physical and mental torment to give her trauma induced anxiety attacks just from thinking he was near? Where was that part of Jax when they subjected all the other people in the circus to all kinds of abuse?

Jax being human, them having genuine emotions, and genuine understanding of pain and trauma, all that only makes their actions seem even worse. Because that means they are fully aware of the damage they are causing, they are fully aware of the pain they are inflicting. They just choose to not care about any of it, they actively chose to suppress the part of themselves that is good.

The worst part is, the way things are portrayed in the show, it actually harms the victims even more, because they get to see people flock to their abuser, they even get to have people who are their friends try and convince them to ignore the trauma and abuse they suffered and befriend their abuser.

Jax is a horrible person, and I really do wish this had been more obvious in the show, because from the reactions of the characters to their actions, it sends a horrible message to the victims of abusers, and only enables abusers to pretend to 'redeem' themselves so they can keep on being abusers.

What's nuts is, while immortal, clearly they feel physical pain.... So every cartoony bit of violence actually HURTS.

"I'm a sad person with a tragic backstory involving my abusive mom!"
You tried to keep everyone trapped, you tormented everyone daily and let's not forget the fact you drove two people to giving up on life. But sure. Uwu misunderstood rabbit.

What the biggest problem is that in the final confrontation between Jax and Pomni, Jax doesn’t mention any of the people he hurt. He only mentions himself. The thing he said that got me the most was "I did this to myself".

It was a completely self centred confession, like that of Jett Fillmore in “GOAT”. Even Ragatha showed more empathy towards both Kaufmo and Ribbit after they were gone.

I hated Jax, and that hatred stayed in consistent until the beach episode, after that I slowly started to like him up until the reveal of what he did to the others in the last episode. Afterwards I hated him more than ever before, I didn’t see a sympathetic villain, I just saw a horrible person who got what he deserved.
