I remember when the Softail came out . People were freakin' out and when they came out with the Heritage Softail with the springer front-end it blew their minds. I'm 70 years old. I remember all this very well.

I got a 89 FXSTC about 2 months ago. It was my Uncles bike, he passed away a few years ago. My Dad rode it a few times over those years and then just gave it to me. I had to put a new battery and a rear brake master cylinder on. But it is an awesome bike. Good luck in your hunt for one.

I got my first Harley last november, a 1990 Softail Custom, my dream bike. Its in near perfect condition and paid 7400 for it (good deal over here in Europe). Runs like a top and rides like a dream!

I will have to be buried with my 1986 FXSTC that I have owned for over 30 years now, Just road it couple hours ago. I traded in my 1981 Shovelhead in on the 1986 Softail back then and I was smiling all the way home and still do every time I ride it today.
The best thing I have ever done to it recently was put floorboards on it. You are right about the dyna I had one once a 2005 and it handled and rode great. I am going to buy the evo version in the future, I am done with twin cams I have owned two of them never going back just because of the crankshaft press fit run out problem.

I just found your video. Wow. So much to say.

The Evo Sportster WAS the pinnacle of that model. I bought a new 1998 XLH 883 that ran like a scalded dog with a little engine tweaking.

The Softail line is my favorite model of the Big Twins also. Evos look the best with that single cam pushrod angle and are pretty much bulletproof when cared for properly. IIRC it was rigid mounted with no balancing. I’ve never ridden one. I know my Sportster had about a 75 mile range on the highway due to vibration.

My current bike is a 2016 Heritage Softail Classic. The last of the TC103s so the best Twin Cam made. I was surprised at how well they rode, thinking function was sacrificed for form. And you’re right. It is the Goldilocks bike, not to big or small. Especially when I strip off the bags, windshield, back seat and sissy bar. All that (with saddlebag contents) is nearly 40 lbs. I call it hot rodding.

Good luck on your new shop.

And I f you really want that FXST then go get it before someone else does.

Having owned an evo dyna, and now owning an evo softail and 2003 twin cam fatboy the two soft tails are a much more comfortable ride than dyna was and that evo softail with s&S carb has that iconic EVO sound and vibration. LOVE THAT BIKE. The downside to it is seems I do more maintenance and little repairs, even if I’m able to do most of it myself. Definitely easy bike to work on and I can fix a lot of issues on side of road with limited tool bag. And I’ve gotten really good tweaking that S&S carb. MY twin cam fatboy, has EFI, AND AFTER DOING SOME UPGRADES like hydraulic cam tensioners, adjust rods, new cam plate and cam, oil pump etc that 2003 Harley fatboy with scheduled maintenance seems pretty damn bullet proof. IN 6 years I rarely have an issue with that bike and the only issue on road apparently was bad gasoline. Knock on wood. LOL! But I would feel confident riding either from Texas to Sturgis and have taken the Fatboy on that trip. Softails are great platforms and EVO IS ARGUABLY THE BEST ENGINE HD EVER MADE FROM A RELIABILITY Standpoint. CANT GO WRONG WITH ANY 90s evo but softail would be my choice. ( I just bought 96 sportster to turn into a bobber dirtster combo because that is arguably the most bulletproof bike Harley made ) great post!

I have owned Harleys and Hondas among many other brands. I'm just happy with whatever I'm riding at the moment. And happy to have all these choices.
