Thank you for this conversation. 🙏🌹 I really related to Bessel talking about his teachers. School was the only place I found love, consistency and validation. My teachers all felt compelled to treat me as someone special and unique as I was bright but exceptionally shy with adults in my early school years (1970s-80s) it literally saved my life by the time I reached high school. The contrast between my horrendous home life and these stable adults at school who recognised me, gave me the inputs I needed later on to survive the chronic trauma.

    59:11
Thank you for this straightforward insight - the one time my ex fisnce called me a TERRIBLE name, I was done.
Friends told me I was overreacting and he was an amazing man (he was ‘out of my league’ tbh) and yet my disinterest was surgical. The heartache was intense but I knew I was right.
The next gal didn’t make it out alive.

Trust your gut and get over the stigma of being single.
Abusers always give themselves away before it gets deadly.

I suggested my book club read this book, and now 10 of us are meeting to discuss it tomorrow. I am delighted to hear this talk, especially considering the book is over 12 years old. Why your podcast popped up on my feed is a sweet synchronicity— I hadn’t discussed that I’m reading the book with anyone, except for 3 months ago when we planned our book choices for the year. I suspect Jung would call it a meaningful coincidence. I think it’s more likely my phone is creepily spying on me. Either way I’m glad to have found your channel.

This is one of the most terrific conversations I have found on trauma in any podcast. I want to thank this two guys, because if hadn't read their books, I would be lost with my own CPTSD. Thank you.

Dankje Bessel, after so many years of following and being helped by Bessel, i heard now that he also had to leave his parents, it means the world to me. He is very wise & helps so many.

Omgosh this was so well done and most definitely needed on so many levels. I can't begin to thank you enough for providing this abundance of knowledge and generosity of explanations of so many avenues of trauma and how individuals can find themselves trapped in those traumas. But to offer hope with a strong belief behind it that individuals can be helped and healed in order to actually live their lives instead of merely surviving it or worse deciding to give up and end things is truly something no amount of thanks or praise can begin to offer in a way of how grateful I am for this episode but also for everyone involved and the tremendous work they do.

It's giving me hope and the courage and extra push to seek out the proper qualified help to deal with and work on my own traumas which have plagued me my entire life. I heard and felt so much of myself in this that more than one occasion I found myself crying and it's sincerely moved me enough to serious say I am going to find that help because I want to know what it means to truly live my life before I find myself at the end of it.

Thank you wholeheartedly . I wish I could meet these amazing men in person to thank them immensely as it would be an honor to do so. Xo

Learning that you need to become an expert in feelings to heal from generational trauma changed my life, it caused me to read 15+ books and 2 years later I was living physical pain free , from getting better at self compassion and boundaries

For many people the ongoing issues are not a disorder of time. The trauma experience removes scales from your eyes to see more clearly how fragile and difficult life is. Especially for those with limited resources making change much harder.

My ex literally would pick fights and push me the point of getting physically ill. I rarely throw up. But i would be in such a defensive state..and i think ..I was really scared.. but I didnt want him to think that I was weak. And he seemed to enjoy the fact that I was in distress and had to run to the bathroom to go puke. My hands shaking , my body sweating, tense, crying. The next morning waking up like I had been physically hit by a train.. and i kept going back..
