I drove an I3 for two months after my 335D was rear ended. My god it was fun to zip around with. I loved the ergonomics, materials and powertrain. The range was mid, but for a daily commute it ran very well. And a small battery meant using a wall plug charged the whole thing overnight. The 335 was a beast, but the I3 stole my heart.

Somehow I NEVER noticed the "i8 is birthing a 911" rear end thing. Holy crap.

I just seen an i8 on a Walmart parking lot 3 days ago. The design is roughly a decade ago, and it still looks cool.

The i3 and i8 were so ahead of their time. There wasn’t another German EV with its own platform until 7 years later in 2020! No manufacturer should be hated for trying a new concept, especially if they’re doing it for the sake of innovation and not for maximizing short term profits.

Whenever I see an I8 these days (rare sighting), all I can think of is the Throttle House bit where he puts on a helmet to protect himself from head injury due to the low A-pillar. Hilarious.

Everyone I talk to or read from who has driven or owned an i3 absolutely swears by that car. I don't think it was as much of a failure in concept as it would seem. The interior especially still looks magical and such a nice place.

Owned both of these and still have the i3. The i8 was a great car to own, while the i3 is still our favorite for shopping runs. Interestingly, with an app and obdII reader you can reprogram the REX to fill up the entire gas tank and turn on the gas motor at 75% battery thus maintaining the performance over its 250 km range. Both were really reliable and even today feel modern and quirky. I for one, commend BMW for taking a leap and making those two cars, at least they are not boring.

Jason forgot to mention that new production plant in Leipzig, where I3 were built, also was the part of sustainability idea. Technical water close circle, electricity from clean renewable sources, and so on. BMW gained new technical expertise with this I-project, what is never a bad thing. Closer to end of lifetime, market revealed a very good demand for I3, so they had to extend the production for several additionl years. And B38 engine of I8 now is in every BMW FWD platform, from mini till X1/X2.
However, even BMW admits now that carbon fiber is not really sustainable material - too much CO2 to produce, too expensive to scrap. But if you dont try - you will never know

The BMW i range in i3 and i8 was truly revolutionary. BMW with i3 not just went electric but changed the way cars are made, materials used, and actually looking at whole circle of life of a car. This was truly future of city EV, and i3S was (still is) actually fun to drive. But for me the BMW i8 is still the dream car to own some day, if BMW release it today it would still looksl futuristic, they nailed the design of the i8. So really don't know what happened now them making XM instead of making second gen of the now iconic i8.
Jason simply awesome video we need the whole series on BMW .
