The saddest thing about this is she didn’t love him back. She reciprocated his lust, but no more than that. She was devoted to Scott, even beyond his death, as the realization that she accidentally killed him gave her the death wish that she expressed to Logan. So no matter if she lived or died, he could never have his heart’s desire. And this makes it all the more powerful when he name-drops Scott to Charles in the past in DOFP, when giving him the names of the X-Men. He could’ve tried to further change history by trying to prevent Jean and Scott from ever meeting so he could have her - instead, he ensured that they would still meet, and indeed they are still together in the new timeline and Logan is still rejected. But he finally learns in the end that real love means wanting their happiness, not your own.
