BACK TO 1984 — Take Me Back to My Best Years // 80s Nostalgia • Vaporwave • Synthwave Mix Cruising down Route 66 — Albuquerque, New Mexico An incredible slice of Americana captured right in the heart of Nob Hill. This shot was taken looking east on Central Avenue near the Carlisle intersection. Renowned photographer Ernst Haas managed to pull over right after a sudden summer thunderstorm. The wet asphalt creates a perfect mirror, reflecting a neon sea of classic American commercialism, Conoco, TraveLodge, Aztec Motel, and that vintage Kentucky Fried Chicken sign glowing in the damp air. By using a heavy telephoto lens, Haas compressed blocks and blocks of neon lights and dense traffic into one mesmerizing, jam-packed frame, making the old First National Bank building in the background look right on top of us. It perfectly bottles up the raw, bustling energy of Route 66 before the interstate highway system changed American road trips forever. If you stand at the corner of Central Ave and Carlisle Blvd today, things look radically different. While the historic First National Bank tower still stands a mile down the road, most of the iconic neon landscape is gone. — The massive Conoco sign on the left has vanished. — The famous Aztec Motel was demolished back in 2011, and the TraveLodge has since been converted. — Today, the street features a modern Albuquerque Rapid Transit (ART) bus lane running straight down the middle, replacing the classic 60s cruisers with modern transit shelters and contemporary storefronts. Only a handful of preserved retro signs remain scattered along the avenue to remind us of its glory days. 📍 Photo capture location: https://maps.app.goo.gl/uP165bPcpnibH... ❤️ Have cool or meaningful photos from the 70s–80s?
