Also of note is that due to the large amount of Scandanavian immigrants, Yoopers have a very distinct accent

Michigander here, I've been to quite a few other states as well as Canada, and I still can't help but love My home state the most. Even though the winters can be rough, it's such a special place!

The UP was definitely the better trade in the end, I'm glad we didn't end up with Toledo lol.

Now while the upper peninsula is way more rugged than the lower peninsula, I can definitely say Northern Michigan, particularly northwest and north central Michigan is not quite flat either. There's some surprisingly steep elevation changes around here, enough to alter and localize weather patterns

Michigan's claim was not based on a flawed survey- the Enabling Act of 1802 defined the Michigan/Ohio boundary as 'an east and west line drawn through the southerly extreme of Lake Michigan, running east... until it shall intersect Lake Erie' which would have put the Strip (and a similar sized chunk of what's now NW Indiana) as Michigan territory. Ohio, being incorporated as a state first, used an incorrectly surveyed map as the basis for its northern border and when later more accurate surveys revealed that the Strip should've never belonged to Ohio in the first place and thus would actually belong to Michigan, Ohio refused to give it up.

The border change after the Toledo War didn't give the Upper Peninsula to Michigan. It expanded the size of the Upper Peninsula that belonged to Michigan. Roughly the western border of the part that has always been Michigan would be a line straight north from Traverse City. Newberry, St. Ignace and Sault Sainte Marie have always been part of Michigan.

side note: Michgian HAD the eastern part of the upper peninsula before the toledo war. It got the rest as part of the compromise.

As someone who was born in Hillsboro, Oregon, but grew up my entire childhood in central Michigan, I couldn’t relate more to a video made by an Oregonian talking about this. The U.P. was never a place that I spent hardly any time, but just the same I couldn’t imagine my former home state without it. Even with its geographic oddity. Even though I haven’t lived in Michigan for 27 years, I still love the state, and about half of my family still lives there. I get back at least once or twice every year. Once in the summer, which is amazing, and once in the winter during the holidays. Which I suppose lends some perspective on the weather. Brrr!! But the U.P. is a whole other animal. Wow is it remote and cold. I’m not the type who could live there, but I respect those who can.
