➡️ Saw this in NY on opening night. The film makers were there and gave a talk afterwards. Every iconic graff writer and local hip-hop artist was in the house. The atmosphere was boisterous and electric as the seats filled up but once the film started a hush fell over the crowd. We knew we were witnessing something historic. Hip-hop was getting its well deserved props. The effect of the opening scene was visceral and as the film progressed the audience came alive with enthusiastic shout-outs, laughter, and finally the roar of applause. As a NYer I've had the opportunity to attend the opening night showing of many iconic films but this one holds a special place in my heart since I was deeply involved in the scene at the time. Nice to see it's up on YouTube for those who've never seen it or who want to revisit it. I still have the Subway Art book I got back then and many other related books, gallery catalogs, and magazine articles-- and a whole bunch of the early records from the era. Many of my friends from the scene have passed but the memories still shine. Rewatching this now is a flashback to a magical time in the city. I feel blessed to have been a part of it.

Every Inner City Kid that grew up 70s 80s 90s running the streets like we did knows and lived the whole vibe of this flick... we run the street all hours of the night and day Skateboarding Writing and just finding all kinds of different ways to entertain ourselves with little to no money and that was one of the many things we did.. Graffiti.. I cant speak for all of us but me, I had a single Mother and I was the oldest of 5... so if I wanted a life I had to make sure Moms & Bros & sisters were good and had what they needed then I was free to do what I want bc its only fair if Im stuck in the house all day babysittin the youngins when Im a youngin too... so she couldnt say nothing so off we went.. I was usually the leader of the group breaking us all into places like rooftops downtown or the rail yard and we would have a blast... never took many pics which is one thing i regret I wish we took pics everyday so we had physical memories of some of the stuff we pulled off bc you wouldnt believe it otherwise!!! Love the World of Graff and hope its grows into a monster no one can control... Graff 4 Life!!!
