I read this so many years ago, and then read so many other books by or about Merton. I went to the Abbey of New Clairveaux in Vina, Calif. I cried when I left, but unfortunately went back to the world, and more of doing the opposite of the grace that i rejected. Now at old age of 86, I was given another chance through grace to come back to the church. I had come to another time of detest to a life of a life not well lived. I read recently a saying by contemplatives to begin again, and thought of the mercy of the lord and be thankful.

Thank you for the audio. It is wonderful listening instead of reading for a change - just this once. Warm greetings from South Africa. 17 May 2026

As a high school freshman my best friend’s mom gifted me Merton’s autobiography. I went on to read everything he wrote. Merton grew spiritually thru the years - in his final years he immersed himself in Zen Buddhism. I often return to his books for reflective reading!

“And now, as if in response to some unseen voice, the bleebles first expanded and then sang as one, like the gossamer dewdrop at the top of a monkey.” Beautiful. ❤️

A real treat. I first READ it so long ago that it was all new to me. I have considered Thomas Merton my spiritual brother since my first read. Thanks.

He perfectly describes the power of the world to suck one in to the irrelevancies of this life, often because others are doing or behaving in the same way. And and also the blind inability in ourselves to see what is going on.

I heard that many things he wanted in his story were rejected by his superiors. Too bad because they probably took out the parts that would have made a human connection. The Confessions of St Augustine were so raw that it touched me deeply.

1:46:39 I really needed to hear this… it’s true (I’m from the UK.. & a Catholic convert..) time needs to be spent in a French, Italian and/ or Spanish- speaking country/ countries…. I have been wondering this to myself for a long time (whilst trying to learn these languages, mostly for this reason… ) I had no idea Merton was a convert & also didn’t grow up in a Catholic (or Christian? at least not explicitly so..) household.. this whole account (with the children and his realisation) is very touching (for another one not brought up with this). Very encouraging for me, helping me not to feel so alone in this journey, also… 🙏🥹❤️
