We Worshipped Rock Stars… Nobody Told Us the Truth

When we were kids, rock stars seemed almost immortal. 🎸 They had the fame, the cars, the money, the lifestyle...and we wanted IN.

But nobody really showed us what happened behind the curtain.

Now we're watching many of those same heroes grow older right in front of us, with every rough note and every performance captured forever on somebody's phone.

So here's my question:

*Did you ever dream of being a rock star? And as you've gotten older, has your idea of what “making it” means changed?*

I'd love to hear your stories. 👇

And remember: *love the music...you don't have to worship the lifestyle.*

I worked in the movie business. I hated working on music videos the one thing working on music videos taught me is I'm thankful I never went into the music industry.

When I was a kid in school I had a garage band with Michael Stipe that later started a band called REM. We would listen to vinyl drink a little beer and talk about rock stars. Later on when REM got big and I would meet w him backstage or with their office people in Athens I realized that it was a business and hard work when not on stage. Luckily, it seems, none of their group got hooked on drugs, in fact they tried to help people like Kurt. They retired in 2011 with plenty left in the tank. Big part of their longevity and success was the lack of excess.

you can give number one hits, sold out tours and platinum album sales but the industry wont care, they'll say "that was yesterday, what you got for me now"...cheers.

Like in Almost Famous, the young reporter was informed by the band to make us look good, and to sweep all the dirt under a rug or they wouldn't sign off that he had actually interviewed or even rode with them.

I’ve said it here before dude but when I was 29 I joined a band in San Francisco in a famous record label and hit the road for 10 months out of the year and I just needed more and more drugs and alcohol to deal with it. It also destroyed my relationship too. That went on for 5 years and I’m still dealing with the repercussions of that lifestyle and I’ve really just turned into a homebody with a boring job. There’s no way I could do that again. My 45 year old body couldn’t take it.

Michael Sweet is 60+ years old and still bringing it, vocally and as a musician. Clean living makes all the difference. Some help from above doesn’t hurt either

Pink Floyd told us so long ago “Welcome To The Machine”. I saw Cheap Trick a couple months ago. Rick really looked his age. Poor guy, I truly felt for him

I was 19, when i moved to Hollywierd, Ca in 1987.....
i didnt drink, smoke or do any drugs.....i was trying to assemble a band. And i would constantly find great musicians, with bad habits....found a singer with a vocal style of young Vince Neil meets Rob Halford...AMAZING VOICE!!! the band was running thru original songs i had written and it sounded awesome and you could feel the success that was about to happen for this band....then every 30 minutes the singer would leave the room and when i finally asked the bass player where he went, he commented...."he had to feed his dog"...i was like what??...then he said " he's getting a bump man" i was so clueless to drugs, but i was becoming more aware that every band i put together had weak links and as soon as we
"made it" the weak links were going to snap our chain of success....tough lesson to learn at 19.
