  I work in a gassy, underground coal and I am happy for the advancements in safety. We still dust the coal and have gas sensors that trip out equipment if methane levels are too high.

  My Great Grandfather on my Mother’s side if the family worked in the coal mines in the East Coast, he was an immigrant from the Slovak regions.<br>He was so sick of the dangers and hazards he saved up his money and returned back “ home” with my Grandma when he was only a few weeks old.<br>They went back, bought a farm, and were going to live happily ever after. Unfortunately he later passed from Black Lung and at 13 my Grandma had to flee back to America when Hitlers forces invaded because she was technically American.<br><br>Even in her old age, while her memories got foggy, she always talked about coal mines with such disgust. She did not like them in the least.

  One of the worst mining disasters was in Germany 1947. Over 400 died at grimborg in the Ruhr coalfields. My Father was due to take over the rebuilding of the Coalfields after the 2nd World War. He arrived from the Uk and was told to rest as he didn’t take over until the next day. The mine exploded and he spent the first week doing Mine Rescue. He was &nbsp;24 at the Time. A Mining Engineer from the biggest British Mine near Stoke on Trent. (Chatterley Whitfield) He secured a Maybach car for his use (liberated from a high up German). He talked about it till his death 4 years ago.

  Sorry for the losses. <br>I work in underground mines in Queensland Australia and machines stop at 2% methane and people are withdrawn at 2.5%. <br>Stand up for your safety and don’t be afraid to down tools. <br>No job is worth dying for.

  It is crazy that all the coal on the planet is from the same couple million years. After nature figured out how to eat tree bark, it stopped ever being a thing.
