I know Peyton Manning said this about audibling. "It was never about finding the right play, it was about getting out of a bad play."

Old Man Philip Rivers came out of retirement and nearly beat the Seattle Seahawks proving that QBs managing their own offenses has become a lost art.

4 years ago, the Raiders were playing Seattle in overtime, Derek Carr called an Audible and Changed a screen pass to a hand off to Josh Jacobs who went 84 yards for a game ending Touchdown. Playes later said they could hear that Idiot Josh McDaniels screaming at Carr for having the Audacity to change his play. That is when McDaniels lost the team.

Tom Brady argues that quarterbacks today are not as mentally developed as in the past, prioritizing physical traits over the ability to read defenses and manage the game. He feels the game is "dumbed down" to accommodate players.

Defense, too; Peyton Manning vs Ray Lewis was crazy fun to watch.

Highly recommend watching Kurt Warner's channel. You can see that old school processing that's just not taught to young QBs.

" All of that initial moving around, the hut hut calls, the eyes scanning by Manning are to get you to jump into your shell and expose your defense.  If you bite on any of it, he will cook you easily.  That's why he is one of the very greatest players to ever come into this league" --- Ray Lewis HOF linebacker for the Ravens.

From someone who has followed pro football since 1957, I really miss quarterbacks calling plays. I am glad that I got to watch the game back then.

There's a quote from Michael Irvin about the Cowboys offense in the 90s that came up during a discussion about Manning's constant audibles. It went something like "Troy didn't audible much beyond hot routes, we didn't care if the defense knew what was coming because they still couldn't stop us".

In his ‘62 book, Lombardi said he seldom ever sent even 10 plays to Starr in a game, and even then, although Starr was required to call the play in the huddle, he had complete freedom to audible at the LOS if he saw the defense was going to be closing that play call down. I miss those days of 2 back, 2 wides, and a tight end and we still had exciting ball to watch. Every bit as entertaining as today, but the talent of the players was the difference, not a hundred different formations and motions. QB under center, both backs could carry the ball, and you still had 5 potential receivers on every play. Landry was trying to do all kinds of sets and motions, calling all the plays. Lombardi let his QBs call the game. Line up and run the play…Vince never lost to Landry…ever. Real football.

This generation of QBs is based around athleticism instead of thinking through the game.   the vast majority of QBs can’t properly read defenses.   Offenses are neutered because of it.
