Referendum or Fair Elections? New Provinces Debate | Orya Maqbool Jan

Pakistan’s debate over the creation of new provinces and smaller administrative units has once again taken centre stage. Supporters believe that smaller provinces could improve governance, public services and the distribution of resources, while opponents fear that such changes may deepen political and provincial divisions. In this episode of Harf e Raaz, Orya Maqbool Jan analyses Maryam Nawaz’s widely discussed statement that Punjab faces a greater threat from neighbouring provinces than from neighbouring countries. What was the context of her remarks, why did they generate strong political reactions, and could such statements affect harmony among Pakistan’s provinces? The programme also examines President Asif Ali Zardari and the PPP leadership’s position on the proposed division of Sindh, the political debate surrounding the so-called “Sindh card,” and the contrasting positions adopted by major political parties on Punjab and Sindh. Should Pakistan create new provinces to improve administration, or should authority and resources be transferred to elected local governments? Can such an important national decision be made through the existing political system, or should it first receive a fresh public mandate through fair elections or a referendum? Watch this detailed analysis of the constitutional, political and administrative questions surrounding Pakistan’s new-provinces debate. Harf e Raaz with Orya Maqbool Jan presents political developments, public statements and constitutional questions for news analysis and public-interest discussion.
