I've been doing this at huge scale for 30 years and in the general case, yeah, I would always use a dac or fiber, but when using these, in all that time, I an count on my fingers the number of times I have had to deal with a problem that was actually caused by one of these adapters.

Would running a Ubiquiti Flex 10 GbE switch with 10GbE copper ports work better than the ag switch with 10GbE SFPs?

Good explained getting into the details of why they are problematic which also gives a clear picture of when you cant expect them to be useful.

If I have SFP+ in the switch and RJ45 10Gb port in my NAS, I do not have a DAC or fiber-optic options (my switch uses DAC for uplink). Only SFP+ to RJ45.<br>The latest Wiitek SFP-10G-T-100 uses Marvell CUX3610 controller, which consumes 1.6W for 10Gb over 100m. Works wonderfully, does not heat over 48C. Older transceivers would draw 2.5W or more and heat up to 69C easily.

I almost didn't click because even though I very much enjoy the channel I didn't think the topic would interest me... but it did, I learned a lot of useful info here. Thanks much Rex!

Thanks, great update! I did exactly that by inserting a media converter - bridging the RJ45/SFP+ connection from the WAN to the UCG-Fiber - thereby avoiding such problems.

Like 10 or 15 years ago yes I had a lot of issues with fiber to RJ45 transceivers specially on Enterprise Grade solutions (i.e., Cisco). Now I have been using some for specific use cases / limitations (and very cheap ones) for couple years on Mikrotik devices and have been solid no issues or complains.
