Although a relatively small detail, Grant did not purchase a slave; Julia's father gave him to Grant.  The fellow stayed with them at Hardscrabble for a while and then Grant gave him his manumission papers.

Some battles are easier to understand than others.  Some are more interesting.  Some battles have great characters.  And some are very confusing.  While others are very brutal and unpleasant.  Other battles may be more recorded.  One of the easier ways to understand the same war is to follow U.S.Grants campaigns.  Which is interesting.  And the Overland Campaign is decisive but included many bloody battles.  Sherman, Sheridan, Thomas and Meade also played significant roles in supporting battles.  Gettysburg is popular for many people for many reasons.  The Navy contributions should not be ignored. The Wilderness is just horrible and indecisive.  What was important was that Grant did not stop his offensive.

Where can one fine more intricate facts/ story's of specifically the battle of wilderness! This is a great long form class that i could listen to for a long time

The Overland Campaign was very deadly but was decisive in rapidly winning the war.  Saving many more lives.

Early in the war infantry were not so keen on building defensive structures but later in the war men were very quick to dig trenches and gather timber for barriers.  Trenches had become vital for saving lives and defending positions.   A major reason for heavy Union casualties in the last year of fighting.  Even Lee turned to using massive fortifications.  Ancient Roman Legions would rapidly build protective camps. Often each afternoon.  Unless camps were already established.   And Roman soldiers were skilled engineers.  When not moving, they would improve their positions and start using rocks and cement.  And also good barracks.

An ancestor of mine died during the Battle of the Wilderness. He was Capt David Gallaher from Mississippi and previously fought in the Mexican American War. In a family cemetery are the graves of his wife and children, his is missing.
