NEW 2027 Ram 2500 Cummins Diesel Power Wagon: Real Upgrade or Just a Badge?

I think the concern with a diesel in the PW has always been the need to compromise suspension articulation and overall off-road capability. While increasing payload, towing and adding a diesel sounds good, it will compromise off-road handling and fundamentally change what the PW is. Also, I agree, the 20” rims are a weird choice for an off-road oriented truck.

You can order a Tradesman 6.7 with the Power Wagon package. While not as fancy an interior as the current model, it will meet the demands of the true Power Wagon philosophy, at a lot less money then the 2027, I'm sure.

More nose weight and more payload capacity necessarily means more spring rate, which means a very considerable reduction in flex capability. So for off-road purposes, it's compromised by default. That's kind of the reason the Power Wagon exists in the first place.

Edit: Adding bags might be a reasonable-enough fix for part of it at least though. Would allow keeping relatively soft mechanical springs while achieving the target ride height and flex possibilities.

At the end of the day, the traditional PW is a very niche market and has consistently sold fewer and fewer of them.

The diesel needed a locker package a long time ago, so this was a good sales decision. Disconnect sway is probably just fluff for most these customers. The winch would have been a solid choice and they should have figured out a way to make it work.

Overall this is a good move that will make more customers happy, and disappoint very few of them. Ram is not in a position unfortunately to serve niche low sales markets anymore. It's a miracle Stellantis hasn't gone bankrupt at this point.

I agree the diesel "powerwagon" should just be the rebel and then the HD warlock should have the rear locker of the Rebel.

I love the idea of the diesel just like from 07-09 you could get them with the diesel. I miss my 2010 with the 4.56 gears and the 5.7l it was a beast and fun to drive.

Everyone keeps talking about needing to tow constantly with the Cummins. I bought my Ram dually new in 2014. I tow a bit but mostly it is just my tool tank. It has been the most reliable vehicle I’ve ever owned. 330,000 kms on it and it’s never been in the shop. It still has full emissions in tact. I have a full delete sitting in my garage. But haven’t found the need to put it on yet. So even if you don’t tow all the time, still get one. Love it.

With a payload 500lbs the limits are limted!

Gonna say the same comment I said on the TFL video: All they did was take a diesel Rebel 2500 (which comes with a rear locker) and put a front locker and sway bar disconnect on it. On an off-road trail, the hemi will walk away from the diesel.

I agree with you, I like your truck better than a new one with diesel.

The diesel engine has so much more torque you won't need the higher ration differential. You will get better mileage with the 3:42 gears as well. The transmission and transfer case will take care of the off-road gearing needs with a diesel engine torque.

I am totally in the same page with you. I own a 2024 Power Wagon fully loaded and I am the happiest guy with it. I even carry a 2200 lbs northstar truck camper and it performs alright. I just put airlifts and no problem. I even have ramboxes and I tie down the camper to the bed using HD ratchet straps not with exterior tiedowns. It does the job very clean. So, the only thing is the gas low milleage. I am considering adding extra fuel tank under the spaces available underneath, perhaps 5 gallons or so.
