I'm a Phillies fan, but this rivalry was all anybody cared about in 2004. After the 2003 ALCS, which was a classic with a 3-brawl game and a Game 7 Walkoff, it was inevitable we would see these two play again in the ALCS, and it was the real World Series that year. They played 19 games against each other in the regular season, and there were multiple regular season classics. The primetime FOX game in April, the Curt Schilling debut game, the Patriot Day comeback, the 12-inning April marathon, Pedro's seven shutout innings, the July 1st game where Jeter dove into the stands, the Millar 3 home run game, this crazy game, the comeback against Rivera, the 7 run eighth inning. Then they somehow managed to exceed everyone's expectations and play the greatest postseason series in baseball history. Two straight losses in New York, a 19-8 shellacking in Boston, Millar draws the walk, Roberts pinch runs and steals second, Mueller gives Rivera his first postseason blown save in 8 years, Ortiz in extras, Ortiz in extras again, Schilling's bloody sock in Game 6, Damon's Grand Slam in Game 7, and the Red Sox finally breaking the curse. This was the closest baseball has ever been to cinema.

As a Yankees fan, the 2003 & 2004 games against The Red Sox were like PPV events.
EVERY game had this kind of intensity.
We hated them, and they hated us!
I really miss these days.

The fight plus the trade of Garciaparra a week later lit a fire under the Sox…and the rest was history.

I remember watching this game at my best friend's house. I'm a huge Red Sox fan but live in Washington State so of course I loved how Tek rocked A-Fraud. I even have a photo of that moment framed in my bedroom.
