Dirt jump bikes were perfected with bmx. This was before people started putting moped suspension forks on bicycles. Mountain bikes (ATBs) came along filling the role Gravel bikes fill today, with touring bike gear range and larger 26" wheels. Slowly, MTBs have become less like touring road bikes and more like BMX bikes. The suspensions and large wheel diameter is what has driven it on it's own evolution. BMX with suspension and full brakes and bigger wheels is still the pinnacle of dirt jump, bike park, slopestyle bikes.
