I have been shooting "off my knuckle" for 65 years. Actually my shooting glove is the arrow shelf. I can shoot on either side of the grip. My arrows are very well tuned and has very tiny fletching. Sinew strings are the best too. An archer should know how to build a bow, arrows, broadheads or knapped stone points. Such skill are the ultimate survival skills.

Finally YouTube sends me the video that I need to watch and have been looking for and finally ends up in my recommendations tonight.
I just recently started my journey into archery with a Korean horse bow, I'm a left-handed Archer who shoots off his knuckle, so I need to see this on how to aim properly.
I am figuring it out but it's tough compared with the guys with compound bows who have fancy sights... things like that to make sure that they are placing their arrows accurately.
Its all intuitive style for me.
Thanks for the video.
Happy 2024 Timothy

The first time I shot an arrow without any kind of rest except the back of my thumb, the lower fletch carved a lovely 2 inch long, about 1/16 inch deep cut across the base of my thumb.
It took about 2 weeks before it healed up enough to be able to shoot again.

If I can add some useful tips from the style of archery I practise - this is just general advice or adding to what Gill has said here:
- You should check the conditions of your arrows before you have a shoot. That way you won't be surprised by a fletching injection.
- If you lift up the nocking point by about 1.5~2cm - so that the arrow is not 90 degrees to the string, but canted downward slightly - this lifts the fletching away from your knuckle so it won't scratch it. He kind of mentioned this idea in the video.
- You don't really need to worry about the odd feather out rule. It is for Olympic and Compound bow shooters.
- Keep both eyes open to maintain your sense of depth. Think of it like pointing - you don't need to squint and look at the tip of your finger to point at something accurately (well, one hopes!). https://youtu.be/Y-RnSsP3ix8?list=PLXWCOFRv012BcG3HGQtCKe6jOQ9EikuOA&t=277
- As a master archer once said (paraphrasing) the point of an arrow is very small, it doesn't matter how big the target is, it's still only going to hit that tiny point - so really concentrate on hitting a very tiny part of your target, not simply an area.

None of these are my discoveries - I learned them from others and practise these teachings often. So far I've never needed anything more than a bow, an arrow, and something small to shoot at.

I started my children out like this. Their little ash toddler bows had the bark left on and the binder twine string was natural fiber.
Plus I learned a ton about bow making.
