  On an archaeological holiday in the Dordogne [France] we [Brits] went upstairs for breakfast. It was the family room and the TV was on showing a Rugby game from last night. The husband went to turn it off, in politeness, but we stopped him, as being Rugby fans ourselves. We then engaged in a long [double breakfast time] conversation about the game in general and got invited up at supper time for a live game. Finding the common ground gives one a complete holiday experience!

  People need to ensure that their brain is in gear before engaging their mouths. Alternatively, &apos;it is better to keep your mouth shut and have people think you&apos;re a fool rather than opening it and removing all doubt.&apos;

  Summer 2001. A post office in Port Angeles, Washington. A woman clerk there: “Hi ! Where do you come from ? What do you do for a living ? How much money do you earn ?” I was HORRIFIED, my multinational European upbringing hadn’t prepared me for it. But before that, in summer 1992, visiting several USA Western States with my 12 years old son and my US partner, almost everywhere we were subject to personal questions… which were gladly answered by my North-American partner, not by me. Once my son, an European 12 years old boy, told me with utter disgust: “Dad, he is telling all sort of details of our personal lives AGAIN !” There I understood this huge divide between our supposedly “common Western World” cultures. Even a boy felt disgusting such lack of discretion and such empty friendliness from people who were just trying to earn a customer or a better tip. It made us react the other way.
