Dhoni liked ishant very much remember lords test infact we were asking to drop ishant always but dhoni was responsible for ishant bowling shory he thought that was the way to extract bounce a wrong decision

Indian cricket would have touched its peak when selectors wanted to remove dhoni as captain in test in 2012 end

I remember the 2017 series what a horrible bowling attack rishi dhawan barinder sran and gurkeerat singh..the guys dhoni had to captain..then bumrah came and on the first day last over he gave only 4-5 runs...with bumrah dhoni would have been much more aggressive

here are some stats for anyone who thinks Kohli just got lucky with fast bowlers:
Under Dhoni:
Umesh: 40wkts @ 31avrg, 45sr
shami: 38wkts @ 36avrg, 59sr
ishant: 152wkts @ 36avrg, 65sr
bhuvi: 28wkts @ 30avrg, 59sr

under kohli:
umesh: 104wkts @ 30avrg, 54sr
shami: 168wkts @ 24avrg, 47sr
ishant: 121wkts @ 25avrg, 55sr
bhuvi: 33wkts @ 22avrg, 47sr

If you have seen tests under Dhoni and under Kohli and even under Rohit, you would know that Kohli and Rahane were the only ones from India who knew how to use pacers properly while also helping them taking breaks and keeping them away from injuries. Dhoni never found an answer about how to use Ishant and Shami and then Rohit just played with "bumrah and insallah" mindset which even injured Bumrah in 2024bgt when Bumrah was caught in stumpmic saying "ab zor nahi lag raha" and Rohit still bowled him.

With stats in front of us, we can't act like "oh dhoni was so unlucky he never had pacers". He was the captain, it was his job to find and get the guys ready and atleast get a good bowling coach if nothing else.
He was a great spin planner but not so much with pace, Kohli in comparison was always different.
You can't win tests and series with just "we have a good team" you need to have the mental fortitude to fight it out for 5 days for 3-5 times across a month and Dhoni never had that hunger in red ball.

Dhoni was a slow technician virat was enforcer so on non resultant pitches dhoni could not be effective. Like kohli. But still I would say kohli much better away captain, dhoni slightly better home captain
