Do YOU think Liu was ungrateful—or simply too broke to pay the Sherpa fairly?

Love our content? Join our exclusive membership community and get awesome perks! When you buy a permit to climb, you should also be required to deposit a fully refundable rescue bond.

The attitudes these climbers had towards the sherpas who saved their lives absolutely disgusts me!

My sister was the only person small enough to reach a climber who fell down a crevasse on Denali, up in Alaska. She spent the first few hours of the rescue using her ice axe to chisel him free. After 16 hours and a bunch more people helping, he was pulled free and rushed to the hospital. Months later she gets a phone call from the climber and he told her to go pick out a vehicle of her choice and send him the invoice as a thank you.

I don’t blame a Sherpa that saves themselves. Many of those ungrateful climbers are full of arrogance n stupidity

When I hear the sherpa left the hiker to die, I think NO the sherpa left the hiker so he could get down the mountain alive. What happens to the hiker is a separate situation! The sherpas shouldn’t have to loose their lives because of the hikers’ decisions to climb a mountain that they can die on! The sherpas have family and love ones and their lives are just as valuable as anyone else!

Both of the ungrateful climbers should have never been rescued. Selfish aholes. We hired Sherpas for a trek in Nepal and fell in love with them. When we found out how little the company we hired paid them, we paid each of them, out of pocket. They were so grateful that they invited us to spend a week in the valley they lived in. We spent a life changing week in a magical valley no tourists ever went, and met so many wonderful families. We met the most humble, giving people in the world. I love Sherpas and their families. I had been involved in mountaineering for decades, and thought I was in good shape. These guys were carrying 30kelos in flip-flops, never stopped all day in the repressive heat, and never complained. It took us almost a week into the trek to convince them to hike in the morning and afternoon and take a break in the midday heat. Absolutely astounding human beings who should be paid much more.

If a sherpa saved my life on Everest. I'd do anything to pay them back.

Imagine giving up your dream of reaching the summit to help your fellow countryman from death... and they have no appreciation for you. So sad

Maybe there should be a 10000 dollar rescue fee added in advance, that you get back if you don't need to be rescued... Or that your family gets back if you don't get rescued...

I would consider Geiji my brother after that rescue for life and give him all the money and gratitude for his heroic act.
