  my DM pulled a joke on us. He made the party of level 1 to try fighting the false hydra. he said that it's a good way to give a taste of what a boss fight is... instead, he just gaslight us for 4 hours straight... of course, we had a tpk, but he said "Upon dying, you realised you haven't even started your adventure, nor have you died... welcome to session 0, see you next week :D"

  Fun fact for those that care. The section the Bagman is referenced in talks about using monster statblocks for other purposes. The Bagman, for instance, is mechanically a Troll

  I've played 2 False Hydra plots with my group. On the second one everyone was aware of the monster they were facing... except the new player. We al gaslighted him so hard it was fantastic

  Since both Oblexes and False Hydras eat memories and use those memories to hunt, I imagine that when they cross paths they get territorial over the shared food source. Imagine being a party just sitting on the sidelines, watching as an elder oblex and a false hydra have a kaiju fight.

  If you lost the opportunity to truly experience the false hydra, nudge a pathfinder GM towards the "brainchild" without looking up details. It is a similar level of WTF.

  I feel like after Players get surprised by Mimics and Doppelgangers, they <b>would</b> start to suspect that the trees are not what they seem as well.<br><br>Once you&apos;re a D&amp;D Player and encounter a Shapeshifter, you can never truly go back...

  My players have a &quot;pet&quot; bagman in their bag of holding which they feed with slain humanoid foes. Every so often I give them a silly magic item as a reward such as the spoon of soup location which glows brightly in the presence of soup

  bagman is by far my favorite creature. I ended up creating a creature like this for my party as a secret boss battle.

  Oblex are so cool. Imagine returning to an inn or tavern and noticing that every person there were there the day before. <br><br>The oblex doesn&apos;t need to sleep either. You return very late at night to the inn you&apos;ve been sleeping recently. Strangely, everyone there seems familiar yet again, even the children who should be asleep by now. None of them ever seem to leave.

  Imagine a city with villages, ruled by an order of superhuman mage-fighters. A group of five (equivalent to a decent army in power) encountered a false hydra during one of their expeditions into unknown territories. The creature devoured four of them before the last one snapped and began attacking everything around him, accidentally hitting the hydra, causing it to stop singing and manifest. In an unequal battle, he defeated the beast and brought back its heads.<br>The Supreme Council was horrified when records revealed that five men were sent on the expedition, and no one remembered. <br><br>Now, twice a day, members of the order, their ears sealed with wax, patrol the villages and check the population count against the records, communicating with the village heads and among themselves using sign language.

Before the game, I was so excited about the monster that I actually told three of my players about the False Hydra before I planned the one-shot. I worked extra hard to bury the lead with the monster during the game. I made the players gift bags with cookies and candy canes and a personalized mini of their character. I set the stage with Christmas carol instrumentals and slowly the playlist turned into darker Christmas music until it was a discordant chorus over slightly festive orchestral music during the final feast... They never saw it coming.<br><br>The premise was that they had to find out who was behind disturbing graffiti that had been appearing around town that was threatening to disrupt the annual feast. It wasn&apos;t until they found the deaf orphan who was trying to warn the townspeople about the monster hidden away in the house it all started in that they finally realized what they were up against.
