While Cologne may not be the prettiest of German cities, the people on the Rhine are usually considered to be very lively and outgoing.

In my opinion, what makes Cologne so incredibly attractive is that it has always stood at the epicenter of European history. For thousands of years, it was a cultural crossroads—shaped by the Romans, Germanic tribes, our neighbors in Belgium and the Netherlands, and the complex history of Prussia.
But there is one historic chapter that gave Cologne its unique charm: the French occupation of the left bank of the Rhine. It left behind a deeply Francophile society that adopted a certain French joie de vivre. You can literally hear this history today! The local Kölsch dialect is still full of French words—like Trottoir for sidewalk or Plumeau for blanket.
Having to constantly reinvent its identity through all these occupations and cultural shifts is exactly why Cologne developed its famous, warm-hearted open-mindedness.
This historic evolution perfectly explains the modern Cologne we love today. It’s a city where welcoming new ideas is second nature, making it Germany’s unmissable LGBTQ+ capital and home to the massive Christopher Street Day festival. Cologne learned centuries ago that accepting different cultures and lifestyles doesn't change who you are—it makes you beautifully unique. That is the true soul of Köln.

Grew up on the German countryside and moved to Cologne about 10 years ago.
Still absolutely loving my life here. The city is grimy and a little punk but the people are loving. Social life here very much still feels like a large village where you constantly run into people you know in unexpected places. If you don't really fit the norm this feels like the place go and get accepted for who you are.

3:30 has the most german / cologne conversation ever:

waiter (Köbes): You back here again?!
customer: yeah, train doesn't come again. so, got half an hour still.
waiter: get another one (beer)?
customer: yeah go on.

I think Cologne is really underrated by tourists, even by Germans like from my region in the South. Yes, the Cathedral is the most visited spot in all of Germany, and what you call the old town is a bit touristy (the old town = Altstadt is actually much bigger, albeit destroyed, and you hardly got out of it in your video; keep in mind Cologne was by far the largest city in medieval Germany). But Cologne has so much more to offer. It has world class art museums, and you didn't even mention the twelve romanesque churches, something that would be a top class attraction anywhere in the world but is overlooked because of the cathedral.

Moved to Köln almost 2 years ago… and I definitely love it here! ❤ Some other cities may have more things to do, or better infrastructure etc. but the people of Köln make it a very liveable place. Its basically my second home now.

As a local it was very intriguing to watch your perspective. You picked a good time for your Trip. Sadly the entry to the Cathedral(Kölner Dom) is no longer free.
Hope you had a good time here!
