Recently bought a new Equinox 800 w/wireless headphones. Spent a couple of hours on YouTube learning fom your videos to be more efficent and successfull in my adventures. I have wanted a metal detector when I would see the ads in coin magazines when I was 8 yrs old as an apprentice coin collector from my Grandmother. Now 57yrs old, Retired, Veteran, time and desire...Thank You so much for your videos.

Good video. Lots of tips. Best day of my 40 years detecting was a mason jar with 13 $20.00 gold pieces from a old gold mining area. Keep swinging.

I've been detecting for 15 years, forests, fields, and beaches. All the pieces of advice given in the video are top notch. Here are the ones I give when anyone asks me.
1) NEVER DESPAIR. Some walk-out are... boring.
2) Swing your coil parallel to the ground.
3) Know perfectly your machine. That mean read the manual, chat on forums, make your own tests.
4) Get a second pack of CHARGED batteries.
5 Never do anything illegal (respect private property, report found guns, stolen items, hidden drug stashes or human remains) or dangerous (never ever fiddle with some unexploded ordinance or funky chemical containers). Be prepared, all this will happen. To you.
6) NEVER DESPAIR.

Very informative for my starting journey in detecting. Thank you!

Excellent video with lots of info for everyone Mark.
A big mistake I see lots of people make is not overlapping your swings. You can watch this with so many youtube guys too. They take a swing and move up two feet and swing back. In the meantime, they just missed a huge triangle of ground.
That's probably another reason no place is ever really hunted out. People walk in a hurry and miss so much stuff.

Wow, no one has ever told me the reasons for size difference of coil before.... That the length directly correlates to the depth. Perhaps its obvious, but had no idea 😅

I appreciate your vid... will look into more! The one thing that I am surprised that you did NOT include that is most important to me, is the ethics and prime directive of this hobby! That is, the ethics and etiquette that is a must! Lack of this is why we have so many places will have signs that say NOT METAL DETECTING! Make sure you leave no trace, especially in public places or at permissions. Make sure you know how to dig a proper plug/flap and how to return it so you couldn't tell that it was dug in the 1st place. If you're pulling plugs make sure you know how to find your target so you can put the plug back undetectable. Cover your holes even at the beach! I was actually on a group dig at a park and one of the new folks was just leaving open holes... can't hate on them too much as they just didn't know! The big problem with this hobby is that anyone can buy a detector but unlike getting a drivers license, there is no training required. We are hated and prohibited in many places because of this! If you're a youtuber or IGer make sure to mention this. This is a great "sport" let's keep it respectable by sharing the ethics. Hope I don't sound too "ranty"... I actually talked myself out of being kicked out of a park by showing a skeptical officer how I dig plugs, let him know I even take trash, and aerate the soil/grass! I actually think he wanted to get into it. We even had a conversation about my machine... you are an ambassador of sorts for this hobby... be a good one! As you become an experienced detectorist it will boil you blood when you see the destruction at parks/beaches or where ever, that was left behind by the unethical detectorist.

Number one mistake i see is people relying on what to dig based on numbers. Going by numbers is a huge mistake but no one has ever seemed to address it.
