This video clarifies some things for me re my dad. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in Sept. 1939 after the Poland invasion. But after the fall of France he got impatient with the U.S. and bolted for Canada to enlist in the Essex Scottish in July 1940. He wanted to get into the fighting. He was deployed to Southern England as the frontline defense against an invasion. He was sent on the Dieppe Raid in Aug 1942, where he was captured.

10:23 - truth is during the Mers el-Kebir crisis, Darlan has gone on holiday with his mistress and cannot be contacted by the French Admiralty who are recieving ultimatums from Churchill. This is no accident as Darlan cannot satisfy both Hitler & Churchill’s demands. The Alexandria part of the French fleet surrenders, because they are in port alongside British warships. In Algeria it appears Vice-Admiral Gensoul believes his force is too strong to worry about empty threats. Whatever the politics of the situation that is a military miscalculation. It may have been a wish not to be humiliated that led Gensoul to ignore the obvious option presented to him of sailing to the Caribbean (into US internment), but in reality go to French ports and let Darlan resolve his predicament en route.

At 10:38 you miss out some fairly crucial parts of the ultimatum that the British gave to Gensoul, specifically that the French could sail with Britain and fight the axis together or sail to the United States or any other neutral port of their choosing so long as it keeps them out of Axis control.
This is a crucial detail, the version of the ultimatum you convey in your video makes it seem far more evil than it was, the British ultimatum offered the French sail with them and fight against the axis together under their own command and crew, sail to a British port where they could wait out the war, sail to a neutral port with reduced crew or to the United States where they could remain out of the war in safety, or scuttle their ships, or be destroyed.

The main issue is that Gensoul was a man of exceedingly poor character who did not have the interests of his country, navy or men at heart, neither willing to follow his orders literally or interpret them reasonably, he was offended that the British sent a man of lower rank than himself to deliver the ultimatum, he was a despicable man who is exclusively responsible for the sinking of the french fleet.
