The Most Underrated Action Game

Origins was practically designed to be a hidden gen from the start: limited appeal to Bayonetta fans (especially hot off the heels of the divisive 3), limited appeal to non-Bayonetta fans, console exclusive, very limited advertising… but it really is a gem, a weird little passion project that’s way better than it should be from its concept - so glad to see you give it its due!

I'm a long time fan of Bayonetta, so I decided to pick this up on principle. On my first playthrough of the game, I was babysitting my niece, and she was watching me play it for a while before asking her if she wanted to play with me. I let her pick either Cereza or Cheshire, and after that we've been playing the game together whenever I watch her. I made a second file to play on my own when my niece wasn't around, and it's nice, but I definitely had more fun playing with my niece.

I've always loved in prequels when a character starts out having a completely different personality than the one shown In modern "times" and you actually get how and what cause that change in personality

The director also helped youtuber Shank Mods save a massive CRT in Japan and got it shipped safely to the U.S. He's a real one.

I didn't know "prancing girlfailure" was my sleeper agent activation phrase, but now I NEED to know more about this game.

One of my favorite aspects that I feel like isn't talked about enough is the fact that every single one of the fairies in this game are for the most part named after/somewhat based on actual fairies from various mythologies

I have never played or heard of this game but all I can think of while watching the gameplay is “wow this game is gorgeous”

I’ve never played a Bayonetta game, but when I saw this game’s visuals I had to pick it up immediately. Cereza is genuinely the most gorgeous game I’ve ever played. YouTube footage just doesn’t do it justice, you HAVE to see it in its full uncompressed glory.

As a HARDCORE Bayonetta fan I knew this game never had a chance to succeed. I loved this game and couldn’t put it down until I collected every little thing and outfit and I honestly really enjoyed it.

The problem with the whole series is Bayonetta 3 and getting into why that is would make this comment insufferably long but it’s worth noting that Bayo 3 was an insane narrative departure from the first two games and everyone was shocked. Bayonetta as a series was never a huge financial success. It’s a series that dies slowly after every entry but cheats death thanks to its cult following. And that, to me, is the main reason why bayo 3 failed.

Bayo origins wasn’t teased as a trailer but rather as a hidden level in bayo 3. It was announced quickly after and released. People never had the time to take in that this is a completely different and new aspect to the series. Everyone was thrown in thinking this would be the nostalgia they needed. A taste of the old entries in the series. But the problem is that bayo origins didn’t follow the story of the old Bayonetta from the first two games or even the new empowered variant from bayo 3. Origins followed the childhood of a Bayo variant that we saw very briefly at the start of bayonetta 3 and that’s Viola’s mother.

A lot of fans didn’t make that connection since we really don’t spend any time with Viola’s mother. This entry was only meant to be retroactively important to the series after the Bayonetta saga ends and the Viola Saga starts but right now no one is really all that invested in the childhood story of an obscure bayo variant. Most fans wanted to dive deeper into the unexplained aspects of the old bayo’s childhood but instead we got this.

The best case scenario is that the series continues on with the Viola saga and a wave of new and old fans go back and explore this entry and finally appreciate this masterpiece and it’s place in the series but I highly doubt any new game would come out after bayo 3 and origins.

Bayonetta as a series cheated death with every knew entry so who knows maybe we will get these games someday

I adore this game. After the mixed feelings of playing Bayonetta 3, the overwhelmingly positive experience of playing Origins was not only a needed palete cleanser but showed that Platinum was capable of much more than their usual campy, over-the-top action genre fare (something I say as someone who has enjoyed their previous campy, over-the-top action games). It really is a shame it didn't do better, because I would've liked to see Platinum continue to branch out into different gaming genres if they were this well crafted, whether they be the further adventures of young Bayonetta or something new entirely.

Cereza and the Lost Demon is such a breath of fresh air, after Bayonetta 3 failed to capture me the way the first two games did. They can do a lot with this character, and even more by leaning into this general tone and aesthetic.

Gotta say, I love this kind of story that shows a protagonist from a stablished franchise in a way they couldn't show in main games.
