My Dad was a naval officer, mostly in the North Atlantic and Arctic, during WW2. When this song was first on the radio we were in the car and shortly after the line "Does anyone know where the love of god goes" Dad pulled over and was quiet for a moment then he said "the weather was worse than the fighting: I never felt helpless in combat but when you see those big waves coming at your little ship it feels like a helpless eternity."

    Bob Dylan once said
"I can't think of any Gordon Lightfoot song I don't like. Every time I hear a song of his, it's like I wish it would last forever"

Each year on November 10th, the Mariners' Church in Detroit rings its bell 29 times to honor the lost crew. Following Gordon Lightfoot's death in 2023, it rang 30 times.

"Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours?"
That line catches me every time I hear it.

The 'word on the street' is that Gordon was motivated to write this song because he 'took umbrage' that the report of the wreck was relegated to a small section in the local newspaper's back pages, which he considered an insult, not only to the memory of the deceased crew members, but also, to the tradition of maritime service in general. His solution made it internationally well-known for generations. Good for him!

Nice reaction! Gordon Lightfoot donated all the money from this song to the victims, and when he passed, they rang the bell thirty times in his honor. Truly a legend.

When she launched, in 1958, the Edmund Fitzgerald was the largest ship on the Great Lakes. She went down on November 10, 1975, during an early November storm.
