Will you receive a Pension in Retirement? If you do, have you saved outside it?

I'm commenting to represent the singles out here that don't have the gravy of a pulic pension.
I took my modest private pension early at 55 so that I could enjoy more of my youthful years.
I contributed 10% to a 401k with company match starting at age 25. My pension is equivalent to about 1/3 of my working pay, but easy to manage without debt or mortgage. Yes it's reduced since I took it early, but at 5 years in, I have no regrets. Still wake up happy to not be in the rat race.

Here's how much you invest if you have a pension... The same amount as if you DIDN'T have a pension. I have a pension and I've been investing as if it doesn't exist. Why? Because I trust this company like a used rubber. Trust in yourself. I consider my pension a "bonus". If it's there when I retire, cool. If it's there for some or all of my retirement, awesome. But I'm not dumb enough to rely on it.

We are in careers with pensions. Will have sufficient income from them once we retire in a couple years. Two of the three will have 70% cpi indexing. One will be flat but could get ad-hoc indexing. Dual social security kicks in about 6 years later. As tenure and pension amount has increased, we actually increased our equity risk since guarantee has grown to cover needs. Saved like no pensions so yes, overfunded. Have lived the experience in being underfunded, evicted, utilities cut off, etc. I’ll take the overfunded “costs” over the other.

I’m 48 and one of the lucky few Gen Xers with a pension and a 401k. I also have a Roth IRA, Roth 401k, and 2 IRAs. I have around 450k total saved. I’ve been saving 15% since 22 years old including the match in 401s. I’ve always rolled to the new one with a new job.

I pretend social security doesn’t exist. Never planned on starting a job in 2013 that has a pension.

I have no idea if I’m saving enough or need to do more.

Absolutely. Been investing since I was 18, so has my wife. Pension is only 20k but I have SS and wife has SS. We saved 2.2m, 1.2 in IRA and 401 k, 800 in brokerage and 200 in Roth. We bought 6 staggered deferred income annuities for a total of $600k. They pay a combined 10%. Our total fixed income will be 150% of our annual needs and wants. Our investments definitely are what allowed me to walk at 56 and still leave us a ton invested. We literally never have to touch it though we obviously can. We are doing another 750k in Roth conversions to knock down RMDs and to allow most of our money grow tax free. I feel pretty confident we will be fine. The Pension is State, the Annuities come from 2 different A+ rated insurance companies. Your advice sounded very on point with how I set up my life. We did all this without ever making more than a combined $160k in our best year. It’s definitely doable, really helps to start young.

Yes. $8,500/month pension with full COLA, which more than covers all our fixed expenses and currently $825k saved ($250k in Roth, the rest in TSP). SS currently projected at $3450/ month at FRA.
