  Over the last several years, do you believe that Brigham Young has been under attack? This is becoming a real issue even between members of the Church. Why do you think that is?

  Brigham Young took my orphaned third great aunt, Maren Johansen (age 7), into his home after she was rescued from the Martin handcart company with feet so frozen they had to be amputated on the plains by Brother Hanks, then further amputated to her knees when she reached the Salt Lake valley.  Brigham Young took her into his home and cared for her until she could be reunited with her older siblings.  He also modified a sewing machine for her when she was fifteen so she could sew with the stub of her leg.

  I recently read "Brother Brigham challenges the saints" by Hugh Nibley. I found it uplifting and inspiring.

  The "who started polygamy" debate is interesting.  I understand that this topic was not the subject of this podcast - so no diving into the details... but I do have concerns whenever an argument is solely "the overwhelming consensus of current experts is....".  In the early 1900's to mid 1900's, the overwhelming consensus of experts was that Joseph Smith initiated the priesthood ban - hence justifying the First Presidency declaring it doctrine in 1949.  It was not until a member in no position of authority - Lester Bush - did research and published his findings (over Boyd K Packers objections and in the face of much ridicule) - that the experts gradually changed their perspectives.  May not apply in the polygamy case - But given that the current polygamy information on the Answers to Gospel website was the content in anti-Mormon literature given to me when I went to the Hill Cumorah pageant as a teen - I appreciate that "indisputable facts" can evolve over time.

  Brigham is my 5th great grandfather. I know he wasn't perfect but to me if he hadn't joined the church I wouldn't be a part of the church so I'm extremely grateful for him on a very personal level.

  I’ve been looking for something like this for a while. I’ve struggled myself to reconcile Brigham Young as a prophet with the things I’ve heard about him, and I wanted a bigger picture on who he was, so thank you! I’m looking forward to learning more.

  We in the church punch down on the caricature we have made of Brigham Young in the same way that we are unable to accept truly masculine virtue, be it in the scriptures, in church history, in ourselves, or in God Himself.
